a character as to make all previous

son. At one mile he was fifteen sec-
onds ahead of the indoor mark, and at

"Johnnie" Nelson of Chicago. erst-
while known as the “flying Swede,“
was supposed to be a competitor in the
race with him but his presence served
only as a background to illustrate bet

in Wulthour. The start was a flying
one. but Walthour had time to smile

Naval Reserves on Elfrida Watched
for Suspicious Craft.
The jackles of Connecticut's naval
battalion broke camp at Fisher’s Is-
land Saturday. returning to their
homes by steamer. The week's only
of the amateur sailors had been
made interesting through the report
sent out from New York that the (li-
plomntic agent at New York for the
Colombian government was sending
arms and ammunition to his country
and that the fllibustering vessel would
pass through the Race and close to
Plum and Gull islands.
Consequently each day the naval re~
servo cruiser Elirida has made trips
to Montouk and neighboring waters
with a division of the reserves and a
sharp eye has been kept for suspicious
looking craft.
Nothing passed during the day time
that the lookouts aboard the Elfrida
could twist into a semblance of a Illi-
bustcr. but the knowledge that one
might leave the Sound caused the men
to keep on their mettle. None of the
officers or men were quite sure just
what they would do if they had sight
ed a suspicious craft.

Mmblnists of Chicago to intervene
with a view to putting a stop to the
importation of strike breakers, who

striking machinists' places. Gover-
nor Tauner’ s action in excluding negro
strike breakers from the state and (le-
portlng them from Spring Valley dur-
ing the big strike of the coal miners
