ers of America, arrived here today.

not been authorized to bring any prop-

conference with President Shaffer, of
the Amalgamated Association, but the
conference had no tangible result. Sam-
nel Campers, president of the Ameri-
can Federation of Labor. also arrived in
the city today. coming from Buffalo, en
route to Washington. Mr. Gompera was
in conference with Mr. Eusley and Mr.
White. but it was said the conference
resulted in no plan of action. Mr.
Jasley said today: “Mr. White and I
did not go to Plttaburg to make any
piopouitlon to Mr. Shaffer, nor have we
been authorized to make any proposi-
tion to the steel trust managers. We
went there to get Information. and.
quite by chance, we met Professor
Jenks, the trust expert of the Industrial
Commission, and John Mitchell, presi—
dent of the Ilnited Mine Workeris.
“The four of he then went to see Mr.
Shaffer." continued Mr. Easley. “We
merely wanted to be informed of the
exact situation and to see whether
there was any opening for the good of-
fices of our conciliation board. Mr.
Mitchell for his part wanted informa-
tion, because he had been asked to call
out 280,000 minors on 1). empathetic
strike, and was not willing to ‘30 it
blind.’ We had no proposition to make
and we merely made it: clear that we
are at the service of both sides in an
effort to reach a settlement."
Mr. Eaeley wan asked if there was a
definite result of the conference.
“None," he replied. “except: that we

“Do you hope that your conciliation

bringing the two sides together?"
