their horrible position. late yesterday
afternoon, and are now lying semi—

say they will soon recover their former
strength and probably be none the
worse for their “thrilling experience. ,1

men knew nothing of the catastrophe
that killed so many of their comrades.
and imprisoned them. They knew that
something had severed their connection
with the crib. They knew that beyond
the air look behind which they had
taken refuse the air was too foal to,
breathe. But they supposed that the
trouble was temporary. Each day they
expected their comrades to come down
the tunnel to their rosette.
When their signal for help. tapped on
the air pipe. was at last answered from
the crib Rest and Engine were pre-
paring to eat raw mule meat. Their
delivorance came just in time to make
unnecessary this desperate effort.
At the hospital the two men were
permitted to talk for a short time. and
they related some of their experiences.
They said they did not know there had
been a fire. and they could not account
for their plight unless some accident
had happened which would soon be re-
paired.
As the time passed by, however and
hours lengthened into days. the men
were beginning to fear they were
doomed. to death either by starvation.
suffocation or drowning.
Their tapping on the pipe to attract
osslble attention. was 'done with little
ope of its being heard. but fortune
favored them. and their condition was
realized when a number of men who
were at work repairing the burned crib
heard the faint. noise away down un-
der ground and immediately set out to
rescue the unfortunates.
“We gave up more than once." said
Kent. "We lost track of the time i
didn‘t know whether it was six days or
tin-co. The gas (inlet have made us
sleepy. We slept u lot i know. We
(lid not know whether it was day or
night down there.
“The darkness was awful. We tried
to get out. several times. Each time the
gas drove us back. At last we decided
that it was get out or die, and we math
(1 try, tapping on the pipe as we went
along."
Engine and Rest are reported to be
in a precarious condition today at the
hospital. They are in a stupor or do
lirious most of the time. The phys
iclanu, however, still believe the men
will ultimately recover.
ENFIELD BRIDGE.
Two Unsuccessful Attempts to Blow
it Up by Dynamite.
THOMPSONVILIYE. August 20—At-
tcmptsfl re made yesterday to blow up
the Eu ed bridge by dynamite. There
are three spans of the bridge standing
one over a canal and two over a part of
the river. The first attempt to blow up
the structure was made at 11:36. when
fourteen pounds of dynamite were ex-
ploded in a number of holes that had
been drilled into the masonry. The first
attempt failed.
At 1: 40 o 'clock. yesterday afternoon
the second attempt was made when
twenty-five pounds (were exploded. The
result of the second explosion was only
it cloud of dust. When the air was
again clear and an unobstructed view of
the bridge obtained It was found that
the spans re dined intact and that the
stout old bgfie had withstood the at.

The work is being done by Thomas
Malcolm. under the immediate super~
vision of J. 0. Entry. the building fore-
man of the Southern New England Tel-
ephone Company. There are fifteen or
twanty men employed on the work of

has acquired thé charter rights of the
owners of the bridge. The bridge was
built in 1832. Since 1896 it has been
cleared to the public.
