of animation and enthusiasm marked
the work of the third day of the Inter-
nntlonul Epworth League convention.
The delegates had been admonished ut
the close of yesterday's meeting, by
Rev. Dr. Berry. general secretary of the
League, that there had been too much
sightseeing, and that "all should get
to work and pump salvation into these
people.” The injunction was obeyed. A
manifest determination to make, this
the big day of the conVention was ev-
erywhere evident. The sunrise prayer
meetings drew‘ crowded houses at each
of the four principal places of worship.
At the pavilion. the Alhambra thea—
tre. the Metropolitan temple and Con-
tral and Howard Street Churches, the 9
o'clock opening song service. with
greater audiences than bud before Join-
ed In the first hymn of the day. A long
program of speeches was listened to
with the deepest Interest and applaud-
ed with hearty enthusiasm. Open air
meetings were held at half a dozen
pieces In widely separated districts of
the city. and were attended by large

NEW YORK. July 20—4). C. Church-

way to Bombay. where he will inaugu-
rate an entirely new system of mis-
sionary work in India. Mr. Churchill
is an engineer and u graduate of the
Mussuchsctts Institute of Technology.
He has been asked to found at system
of model trade schools at Ahmed Ita-
gar. about I75 miles inland from Bom-
buy. Speaking of his mission. Mr.
Church said the missionaries in the
cost have decided in favor of more
practical instruction and loss Bible
study as a, means to the great ends
they seek. “Theflsnterprisa on which

government and partly by the contri-
butions of two New York gentlemen.
Dr. --Humuir. of the Congregational
Church. has collected about $25,000
and has secured the promise of the
government to pay half the salaries

Building Burncd on Hartford Avenue
in Marlow District.
Shortly before 6 o‘clock inst evening.
the old tool and store house on the
south side of Hartford avenue. In the
Meadow District. East Hartford, west
of the Williams Brothers property, was
nearly destroyed by fire. When the fire
was discovered the whole east end of
the building was ablaze. An alurmzwss
given by the ringing of the hell on
Actna Hose Company‘s house, and that
company responded quickly. When the
firemen arrived it looked as though it
would be impossible to save any of the
building. but by hard work the part
where the office was located was
saved, silhougz badly damaged.
a'I‘licrs won a urge amount of oil rind
paint in the building and also a large
number of shovels and other tools used
on the road. A quantity of four feet
wood and long timbers were stored
there. The loss is estimated at about
31.000, covered by insurance.
, How the tire started Is unknown.
but it Is thought that some of the work-
man may have been smoking there. The
building is the property of the Con-
necticut River Bridge and Highway

with the road repairs. It was formerly
the property of the old bridge company
