When they entered the school they
knew nothing. and today the majority
of them can write a letter and read a

Among the eighty- -tlve pupils there
were seven men who are serving life
sentences. Mr. Latham said that the
prison authorities try to ill: a man up
so that he can go out into the world
when his time expires, and so far they
have been successful
in connection with the school there
is a very good library from which the
prisoners are allowed to draw two
books each week. The library has
ii .000 useful and interesting books. and
during the past year 30 000 volumes
were read by the convicts. Besides
the library books the prisoners are
allowed to read the monthly paper
published by the convicts. There are
a number of educated convicts who
edit and manage this monthly.
Mr. Latham said that besides the
school the religious services have
been very interesting. Every Sunday
morning from 9 until 10 mass is cele-
brated by Father Duggan. of Wethels-
field. From 10 until ii there is a Sun-
day school for Protestants and Catho
lice for which the teachers are fur—
nished by the Y. M. C. A.. and the'
Young Men' 5 Catholic Society From
71 to 12 Pratcstant services are con-
ducted. Thursday night is devoted to‘
a Christian Endeavor meeting. which
is conducted by Mr. Latham.
