Mrs. Hall Aided to Pay for Homestead
——An Old Litigation.
In the suit of the late J. Wesley Sup-
plee against Russell L. Hall. of New
Canaan. and others. before Judge. Silos
A. Robinson, in the civil Superior
Court. yesterday. Mr. Hall was put on
the stand and testified regarding his
transactions with Francis C. (lurblc:
and also regarding his wife’s contribu-
lions. towards the purchase of the
homestead. The evidence was to sup-
port the claim of the family that Mr.
Hall had no right to mortgage the
homestead as security for the Urublo
note. us It was owned in part and paid
for in part by money earned by his
wife.
Mr. Hall testified that when he mar
rlcd In 1857 his wife had some luondy.
She was a dressmnkor and continued
to earn money. She proposed that if
he would purchase a homestead she
would help pay for it. He stated that
she gave him on on average of built)
a year for the first twenty to twenty
five years. After 1877 it llvl‘l‘iluml
nearer $300 a year.
When cross-examined regal-dim; the
return of the Grublc note and the gir-
ing of the mortgage as security. he
stated that the sheriff was ready to
serve an attachment and. asked him
to wait until the next day. This. was
not consented to by the olllccr, and Mr.
.Hall stated that he offered him bank
stock and this was refused. lie then
gave the ofllcer a mortgage to prevent
the attachment.
He stated that he did not apprehend
that the Grublemotos would not be
paid until this was sent to him for par-
mcut. lie was not quite clear when
he decided to wind up his businesa,
but finally admitted that it was after
consultation with counsel. The case
was not finished at the adjournment of
court, and as the short calendar aes» .

Supplee-Hall case will not be complet-
ed before next week.
