Over Some Names.
The First Voting District, which was
claimed by the Democrats. gave them
a little surprise when‘the votes were
counted. last night, for they showed a
plurality for McKinley of 319. Consid-
ering the fact that the normal Republi-
can majority in this district is less than
one hundred. and figuring on the num-
ber‘of Democratic ballots in the box,
over two hundred Democrats must
have voted the Republican ticket. This
is practically half the number who do-
serted the party tour years ago. Mc-
Lean had a majority of 225 in the dis-
trict. and Hill, for Congress. had 207
majority over his Democratic oppo-
nents. Bradley's majority over R. H
Golden was 182. H. W. Gregory, who
made a phenomenal run for judge of
probate in the town, had a majority of
474 over Mr. Hurlbutt in this district.
E. S. Adams, for representative, was
cut but little by 0. E. Wilson. his op-
ponent. 1n the other districts he re-
ceived practically the full party vote.
The count in the First District was
not completed until after midnight be
cause of many hindrances in the work.
The Socialist Labor and Social Demo-
crutic tickets were thrown out, after a
lengthy discussion, because of not be-
ing printed in accordance with the
law. A question was also raised con
earning a hundred Republican ballots ‘
which were printed in the old style
type and had probably been sent to vot-
eis through the mails. They were. lin-
ally allowed to stand.
The Citizens' ticket for representa-
tive was the next to receive attention.
A formal protest was made by Judge
Asa B. Woodward nguinsLthc counting
of the ticket, on the ground that there
was no citizens' party, and that no Cit-
izens' ticket had been nominated at a
regular caucus. The protest was en-
dorscd by E. O. Keeler, William A. Our-
tls, A. C. Wheeler audit. 8. Adams.
In the contest for judge of probate
in this district Gregory had 395 blisters
over Hurlbutt, out of which 281 were
on otherwise straight Republican bal-
lots. Hurlbutt had fourteen posters
over Gregory.
For Congressman Lyman had twenty-
fonr pastors over Hill, while Hill had
eleven over Lyman.
Golden. for senator, had 104 pastors.
while Bradley had thirty-nine.
SECOND DISTRICT.
The result in the Second Voting Dis-
trict was. like that in the other dis-
tricts of the town and state, somewhat
of a surprise to the Democrats, as
they had expected that the vote would
show larger returns. The greater part
of the voting in this district was done
curly in the morning. Only about five
hundred of the 1,625 votes cast. were
voted in the afternoon. Three hun-
dred voters whose names were on the
list did not cost a ballot.
The men in the envelope booth gave
out 1.635 envelopes. Six of the voters
did not have their names on the regis-
try list, and one‘ man was deprived of
a vote on the ground that he was a
resident of another place. not having
returned to South Norwnik. utter an
absence of several months, early
enough to obtain a residence. One
envelope was counted as having been
cast blank, the only contents of it be
ing a rent receipt for :35. made out to
Christian Kraemer. the tailor, in North
Main street, who can probably obtain
the receipt by calling on Moderator
George H. Vosburgh.
The number of straight Republican
national and state tickets cost was 603
and the number of straight Democrat
in tickets 606.

was illegal. its circulation not having
been authorized by any duly recog-
nizod and organised political party.
Forty-two of those brillots were cast
with the state and national ticket. In
twelve envelopes o. "Citlsens" ,tlcket
had been placed, together with a legal
representative ballot. but as the mods
erutor could not recall the intentions
of the voters who had deposited them,
all were thrown out.
Two Republican national and state
ballots were thrown out as being dupli-
cates. Three mutilated ballots. two of
which were Democratic and one Ro-
publicsn, were also thrown out. 'An-
other Republican bsllot, which bore
the name or the Italian voting It, was
not counted. Two ballots were also
rejected. because they bore no, official
handing. One of them contained the
names of the candidates of the Repub-
licsn party, clipped from a newspaper
in the suite and placed In the envel-
one.
Notwithstanding an average Repub-
lican majority of the hundred and six-
ty in this district, Judge Gregory re
cclvod the handsome vote of 957, to
his Republican opponent J Roldan

W ASHINGTON, November 7—Representative Loudeuslager,
of New Jersey. secretary of the Republican Congressional Commit—
tee. this forenoon claimed the election of 204 Republicans to the
next House, a majority over all of 51. The Democratic Congress-
ional Headquarters were practically deserted at 10:30 o'clock.
Chairman Richardson had not put in an appearance, and his lien-
tenants had stopped figuring. They conceded, however that the
House would be safely Republican.

NEW YORK, November 7—George Gordon Battle, who is now
counsel for'Charles F. Jones, secretary-valet to the late millionaire
William M. Rice said today that his client is still too weak to permit

his Tombs cell. He is indifferent and. cheerful apparently as
ever, and seems to completely disregard the statement made by
