cite coal fields of this state. indicate thar the tie-up. caused by the
strike‘for higher of more than 140,000 mine workers is at last
as complete as the leaders of the United Mine Workers. of America
claimed at any time. Companies and individmis owning mines.
who had chimed that their workings would operate as usual.

lions in the Hezleton region were running. this morning. with .35

numberof men in the district were idle.

caily complete. As was expected, the'Schuylkiil '01:, with Potts-

These men have not the same grievances that prevail in the other ,
distfcls. and if they go on a strike it will be largely through asym—

{President Mitchell. of the United Mine \Vorkers. who has es-
tablished headquarters at Hazleton. and is personally directing the
etrike. estimates that more than 1:30.00 men struck. and that 15.0w
more will join them tomorrow.

part of the country. in the general forecast of Saturday morning.

western states. and the first frost of the seam“ is indicated for to
night in the states of the Ohio valley. the Lake region. western New

England. the interior of New York. and in the mountain district of 0’1
Pennsylvania. Maryland and “first Virginia. The frost will not be m

sufficiently severe to injure vegetation or crops. and the 'minimum
temperature in the districts named will not fall below 40 degrees.

afternoon. The corrmany proclaims that if the men are not back

A Hundred Boxers Killed.

BERLIN. September l7—~An ofiicial despatch from Shanghai.
says a German naval battalion. accompanied by forty Bengal lam
rem. captured and burned the town of Lieng. September It. A hun~
(Ire-d Boxers were killed. The Chinese regular troops occupyingthe
place had previously fled. The German loss was one man killed
and five men wounded.

Church Steeple was on Fire.

SEYEOL’R. Conn“ September 17~The steeple of Trinity
Episcopai Church was found to be on fire. at 8:30 o'clock, last night.
The blaze was extinguished after several hundred dollars‘ damage
from fire and water. The origin of tire fire was probably lightning.
