News came from Madrid that pre-
sumably because of the display of na-
val force by Great Britian at Gibral-
ter, the Spanish fleet has been ordered
to “concentrate at Cadiz.”This is rem-
iniscent of our own war days, but in
view of the performances of the Span-
ish fleets then it will . hardly give our
British cousins much uneasiness. In-
deed, even Boston will receive the
news without perturbation.
It is proposed in France to establish
a Court of Justice run by women and
for women, to which may be carried all
those cases concerning-which the most
learned men know nothing. This will
relieve a man Judge, for instance, from
determining questions as to fit in suits
brought by dressmakers against their
clients; and it ought to do away also
with much expert testimony in such
cases.
The recent installation of young wo-
men ushers at the Fewsmith Memorial
Church, in Newark has caused a mark-
ed increase of attendance. So far the
young women act as ushers only at the
evening services, when, if ever, the
young men attend. The plan is to
change the ushers frequently. It
doesn’t have the same effect in this
town, the plan having been adopted
and abandoned several years ago.

bodies; all substances are transparent;
but our being blind to the lumiere noire.

Dr. E. W. Allen, assistant director of
experimental stations in the agricul-
tural department at Washington, has
just returned from the west, after in-
specting the various stations. One of
the most interesting matters to which
he devoted his, attention was the col-
lection of facts relating to cheesemak-
ing. The station at Wisconsin is tak-
ing the lead in this matter, and the
discoveries which have been made there
are at variance with those made in Er.-
rope—thnt the ripening of cheese is
due to bacteria. American experiments
demonstrate beyond doubt that the
principal change in the albuminoio‘s
which takes place in the ripening proo-
ess is dependent upon the fermenta-
tion in the milk itself and not upon
the bacteria.
