Quentin Prison, with a record of twen-
ty executions in five years, and his pre-
sentc'ondition is ind used by hallucina-
tions. Every time he falls into a doze
he sees the spirit of 'some of the mur-
derers whom he has hanged, especially
the spirit of Durrant, who murdered
two girls in a church, and of the bunch

‘Polaris, as the astronomers call him,
isn’t so steady a fellow as he appears,
for Prof. W. W. Campbell disclosed this
about him on September 12 to a New.
York Times reporter:
“From the well-known principle of
the shifting of the line in the spectrum
of a star we can determine whether the
star is approaching or receding from
the observer and how rapidly. For most
stars the velocity is constant. For some
stars the velocity is variable, due to the
attractions of companion stars. The re-
cent observations of Polaris at Lick ob
servatory show that its velocity is varia
ble. It is approachino the solar system
now with a. velocity of eight kilometers
per second. This will increase in 1110
days to 14 kilometers, and in the next
two days will decrease. again to eight
kilometers. This cycle of change is re
peeled every four days. The bright Po-
laris revolves about the center of gravia
ty of itself and an invisible companion
once in four days. The orbit is nearly
('11 culai and is comparable 1n size with
the moon '5 orbit mound the earth.
Both companions of Polaris are invisi-
ble, but their presence is D] oved by (lis-
turbances which 111ei1 attractions pro-
duce' 1n the motion of Polaris. ”

Good roads add materially to the
value of any country. A recent visit
in the rural sections convinces us that
the two important factors in the im-
provement of roads are the Cutting down
of grades and a thorough drainage to
prevent the damage done to roads by
streams of water flowing from water
sheds. It is :1 Waste of money simply to
repair the surface of the road while
permitting high grades to continue,
'prevcn ting the transport of economical
loads of wood or farm produce. The
practice should also be condemned of
covering bowldcrs and rocks in’ the
roadway with earth in the fall. They
should be removed by blasting or by
the use of the crowbar, thus remedy-
ing the trouble once for alI.——American
