GOOD EVENING.
As in the case of furniture, when a

The unanimous decision of the Arbi-_
tration Commissione1s at Paris, defin-
ing the boundary between Venezuela
and British Guiana, is a most satifac-
tory outcome of a long dispute and one
that must be especially gratlfying to
Americans, since it is the‘ direct result
of the firm and unselfish attitude as-
sumed by this government 'and a tri-
umph for American ideas in diplom-
acy. ‘
Those anti-expansionists who have
hoped ‘t-o'be' able to quote Dewey as on
their Side or to find something helpful
in his attitude are of course not consol-
ed by the news that every time Secre-
tary Long, in his presentation speech,
referred to the administration’s policy
in the Philippines the Admiral led the
applause in a way to indicate that he
stood with and supported that policy.
John Sherman is quoted by the New
YorkWorld as believing that Admiral
Dewey would be a strong Presidential
candidate for the reason that he would
be voted for-with extreme disregard of
party lines. Mr.
however, that the
Sherman also says,
Admiral displays
great firmness of character and a won-,
derful degree of self confidence, and
this, while it would undoubtedly satisfy
the people, would hardly make the
great sailor more popular with the pol-
iticians. I ‘

An old elephant taken into battle on
the plains of India was a standard-
bearer and carried on his huge back the
royal ensign, the rallying point of the
Poona host. At the beginning of the
fight he lost his master. The “”mahoot,
or driver, had just given the word to
halt, when he received a. fatal wound
and fell tplthe ground, where he lay
under a heap of slain. The obedient ele-
phant stood still while. the battle
closed around him, and the standard
he carried. He never stirred a foot, re-
fusing to advance or retire, as the con-
flict became hotter and fiercer, until
the Mahrat-tas, seeing the standard still
flying steadily in its place, refused to
believe that they were being beaten
and rallied again and again around the
colors. And all this while, amid the din
of battle, the patient animal stood
straining its ears to catch the sound of
that voice it would never hear again.
At length the tide of conquest left the
field deserted. The Mahrattas swept
on in pursuit of the flying foe, but the
elephant, like a. rock, stbod there, with
the dead and dying around, and the en-
sign waving in its place. For three day s
and nights it. remained where its master
'had given the command to halt. No
bribe. or threat could move it. They-
then sent to a- village 100 miles away-
and brought the mahoot’s little son.
The noble hero seemed then to remem-
ber how the driver had sometimes given
his authority to the little child, and 1m-
mediately, with all the shattered trap-
pings clinging. as he went, paced quiet-
ly and slowly away.
