LEXINGTON, Ky., July 14.—The
Republican Stage convention, after a
night of wrangling over credentials and
other preliminaries, yesterday nominat-
ed W.‘8.' Taylor, attorney general, for
governor and John Marshall of Louis-
ville tor lieutenant governor. The plat-
form strongly indorses President McKin-
ley and his conduct of the war with
Spain and with the Filipinos.

HAVANA, July 14.—G0vernor Gonor-
al Brooke and the members of his family
reached the palace last evening, the resi-
dence of the former governors general of
Spain, made famous in the history of
Cuba by the tenancy of Weyler, Campos,
Blunco and a host of others. The build-
ing has been more or less modernized
every decade. The renovators have gone
carefully over the furniture, which is of
the finest woods the island produces, ma-
hogany, cedar and rosewood; have re-
gilded the mirrors, added artistic deco-
rations and applied fresh paint every-
where. The old structure now, looks
new. The statue of Columbus in the
courtyard, carved out of the finest mar-
ble and now more. than 200 years old,
hasheenharefully washed. This work
lawns only-"finished 'Wedhie‘nday. One of
the most interesting relics in the palace
is the bed upon which the Princess Eula-
lia slept during her visit to the western
hemisphere in the Columbian exposition
year.
- The old headquarters at El. Vedado are
now practically abandoned so for as pub-
lic business is concerned. General Chaf-
fec, the governor general’s chief of staff,
and Adjutant General Richards left in
the morning. The clerks and orderlies
who were engaged in preparing the desks
for removal remained until evening.
Grimm-n] Ludlow says there is no truth
in the report that he had consulted the
governor general regarding a reduction
in the salary of the chief of police and an
abolition of the post of,ussistant chief.
Nor is there any foundation for the story
published in the United States asserting
that :1 disbursing officer at Palatine had
decampcd with funds and that when 123
employees of the engincors’ department
asked for their wages Colonel Black
angrily answered that nothing was due
them. Colonel Black says there is only
one disbursing officer in his department,
that this official has not tied and that the
men were duly paid at the beginning of
the month.
