PARIS, June 2 ——Major Marchand ar-
rived here yesterday. He was vocifer-
ously cheered as he alighted from his spe-
cial train at the Gare dc Lyon by a
crowd. numbering 50,000 persons. None
of the; ministers was at the station to re-
ceive him. He was guarded by the police
to his carriage to prevent him from being
overwhelmed by the rushes of his admir-
ers, who covered his carriage with flow-
ers and shouted “Yive Mai-chant I” as the
hero of F'ashoda was driven away to the
ministry of marine. Major Marchand re-
peatedly bowed his acknowledgments en
route and. again upon the balcony of the
ministry of marine after his arrival there,
the multitude keeping up an incessant
cheering.
M. Lockroy, minister of marine, gave a
luncheon in Major Marchand’s honor.
The demonstrations continued to a late
hour in the evening, the crowds parading
and shouting the now familiar cries and
singing the “Marseillaise.”
A Royalist band, carrying a flag, was
dispersed by the police, and an attempt
to create a demonstration in favor of De-
roulede was quickly drowned by cheers
for Marchand and the army.
A dramatic scene occurred at the Mill-
tary club in the course of the evening.
Major Marchand, in response to loud
cheering. appearcdupon the balcony with
the minister of marine, M. Lockroy, and
the minister of war, M. Krantz. on either
side of him, and shouted: "Be united!
Vive la France! Vive la republique!”
The throngs'went wild with excitement.
The chamber of deputies in the evening
adopted a resolution of thanks to Major
Marchand for his services in Africa and
to General Gallieni for his brilliant ad-
ministration in Madagascar. The reso-
lution was opposed by M. Albert Joseph
W'alter, revolutionary Socialist, deputy
for St. Denis, who was vigorously hootcd.
Lieutenant Colonel du Paty de Clam,
seriously implicated by the recent pro-
ceedings before the court of cassation as
the probable instigator of some of the
forgeries that have figured in the Drey-
fus affair, was placed under arrest at
half past 7 last evening'and taken to the
Cherche Midid military prison.
The demonstration in the Place de
l’Opera was not surpassed by anything
of the kind during the Boulanger agita-
tion. Fully 30.000 people congregated
there.
Dreyfus Not on Board.
COLON, Colombia, June 2.—The
French steamer Lafayette, Captain de
Chapelin. from St. Nazaire, France, May
9 for Colon, by way of Fort de France,
Martinique, French West Indies, has ar-
rived here. It was ascertained positively
that Dreyfus is not on board. The Cay-
enne steamer, on which he will presuma-
bly lehve French Guiana, touches suc-
cessively at Surinam, Dutch Guiana;
Demerara, British Guiana; Trinidad, St.
Lucia and Fort de France, where she
will connect in the ordinary course on
June 10 with the Lafayette returning to
France. It is very improbable that the
French government, in taking Dreyfus
back for a new trial, would send him so
far west as Colon, although a report to
this effect was circulated here.
Gold Export.
NEW YORK, June 2.——The announce-
ment was made late yesterday that the
National City bank would ship $1,000,-
000 gold on the steamship Lucania, sail-
' ing for Liverpool tomorrow. An officer
of the institution, when questioned as to
the shipment, said that it was an ordi—
nary transaction made in the regular
course of business and said current rates
for demand sterling. 488 to 4881/4, allow—
ed a profit on the transaction. He re—
fused to state where the gold would be
taken from, but said it was a matter of
no Consequence, as the vaults of the
Clearing House association and sub-
treasury were flooded with gold.
Steamer Orion Wrecked.
ST. JOHN’S, N. F., June 2.——The
Danish steamer Orion, Captain Callesen,
from New York May 27 for Copenhagen,
carrying a general cargo of flour, pork,
poultry and grain. with a crew of 45
men, beside 20 shipwrecked seamen go-
ing as passengers by her, went ashore
yesterday at Fresh Water point, seven
miles west of Cape Race, and became a
total wreck. A dense fog was prevail-
ing at the time, and the ship struck while
going at full speed, crushing in her fore
compartment and tearing out her bot-
tom. Thecrew and passengers escaped
with great difficulty. ,
Filipino Actors May Enter.
WASHINGTON, June 2.—It has been
decided to allow the company of Filipino
actors now detained at San Francisco
to enter the United States for the pur-
pose of giving exhibitions. They will be
required, however, to furnish a bond that
they will" return to their homes after the
expiration of their engagement. This
case has been a difficult one to decide,
because of the fact that thcse Filipinos
came to this country under contract to
give exhibitions. It will be held, howev-
er, that they are not contract laborers
within the meaning of the contract labor
law.
Meade. Finally Sails.
PONCE, Porto Rico, June 2. —- The
United States transport Meade, formerly
the Berlin, which recently struck a sunk-
en wreck outside the. harbor while leav-
ing port, and which, after being pal-Hy
repaired, Was compelled to put back on
again leaving port owing to the discov-
ery of another leak, has finally effected
what seemed adequate repairs and sailed
for the United' States. The Meade has
on board the Nineteenth infantry regi-
ment, which is under orders to proceed
to Camp Meade.
Santiago llnrbor Improvements.
ANTIAGO DE CUBA, June 2.—Thc‘
work on the new commissary warehouse,
400 feet ing, the extension of the gov-
ernment wharf a distance of 150 feet to
30 feet of water and the dredging of the
harbor has begun. The shortage in avail-
able funds made “a- public subscription of
$15,000 necessary, but this amount was.
easily raised by the merchants.

Robert McAdam, 80 years old, of the
firm of Robert McAdam 6: Sons. cheese
exporters of New York and one of the
best known cheesemakers in this coun-
try and Great Britain, died suddenly in
' Rome, N. Y.
Double Dentin Penalty.
SOMERSET, Pa.. June 1.—S. Peter
Meyersewas yesterday found guilty of
murder in the first degree for shooting
and instantly killing John Lenhart, who
had been deputiged by his brother, Nel-
son Lenhart, constable of Summit town-
ship, to assist in arresting the defendant
for murdering Michael, Kan-ney at Gar-
rett, this county. on Sept. 20, 1898. Mey—
ers was found guilty of murder in the
first degree Sunday morning for shoot-
ing Karney. The court will have to im-
pose the death penalty twice on the pris-
oner. This is said to be without a prece-
dent in the history of criminal juris-
prudence in Pennsylvania.
Schley ln Omaha.
OMAHA, June 1.—-Rear Admiral
Schley and wife arrived in Omaha at
noon yesterday on the return from their
western trip in company with General
and Mrs. Manderson. The trip through
Nebraska was one continuous ovation.
The admiral made. brief speeches at ev-
ery stopping place, thanking the people
for their welcome, which he took not to
himself. but for the navy. At Metropol-
itan hall last night the admiral and his
wife were guests of the Royal Arcanum.
Several hundred persons were present,
and the admiral spent an hour at the
Creighton Orpheum theater and was
wildly cheered by a large audience.
Chile at Peace and Prosperous.
SANTIAGO, Chile, June 1.-—In his
message to the Chilean congress on the
opening of the summer session President
Errazuriz asserts that the financial sit—
uation is prosperous and that Chile is at
peace with the whole world. The reve-
nues are given as 110,000,000 pesos and
the expenses of the government as 102,-
000,000 pesos. The total imports are 102,-
000.000 pesos and the total exports 168.-
000,000 pesos. Senor Errazuriz proposes
the construction of railways and the
opening of schools for “practical educa-
tion.”

NEXV YORK. June 1.—J. Neale
Plumb, who shot and killed Alexander
Master-ton on May 3 in the Hotel Bur-
lington. on Thirtieth street, was to have
pleaded yesterday morning before Judge
McMahon in general sessions to the in-
dictment for murder in the first degree.
Word was sent from the Tombs, where
to was confined, that he was suffering
from erysipélas and that he could not ap-
pear. The matter went over indefinitely.
Later he was taken to Bellevue hospital,
where he died at 8:30 p. m. '
Peruvian Elections. ‘
LIMA. Peru. via Galveston. June 1.—
Aerording to the latest advices as to the
progress of the presidential elections,
there have been only trifling disorders at
two points in the entire country. Senhor
Eduardo, the popular candidate for the
presidency, now lacks only 9,730 votes to
complete the number requisite for a legal
election. and there are 41 provinces still
to be heard from.
