ands, under date of January 24, from

ity betwecn Chief Justice \Villiam L.
Chambers of the supreme court and
Dr. Joanncs Raffle], the German presi-
dent of the municipality of Alha. Herr
Grosmuhl, a German 1esident of Apia,
who was arrested for smashing the
windows 01‘ the supreme court cham-
ber, was sentenced by the chief justice
to' imprisonment and to pay a fine. Dr.
Buffet instructed the police authorities
to release Lien- (.1-osmuhl, whose fine
was subsequently fixed. at one thous-
and duiitils. ,
The German consul, Herr Rose,
theretion wrote to the American con-
sul, Lloyd \y. Osbourn, and the Brit-

Many Officials in Danger of Jail—An Ex-
tr lordinary Situation,
Omaha, Feb. 2.--Omaha City business
may soon have to be transacted front
the jail unless a solution is found for
the tangled web of litigation and of
charges of
being investigated.
Some time ago Police Judge Gordon
sentenced Ca _1tain Iler of the police
force to jail for contempt, and the case
is now pending on appeal.
He threatens to order the arrest of
City Attorney Connell unless papers
in the hands of the city attorney, which
the judge asserts belong to police court
records, are returned.
The city council is debating the ques-
tion of bringing impeachment charges
against Police Judge Go1don and prob-
ably “ill do so unless the legislature.

office.
The Board of Education is investi-
gating charges of corruption made in
connection with the American/ Book
Company’s contract for furnishing ge-
ographies to the puLlic schools, and
the city council is ai so laborip _g with
charges made by the city engineer that
a ring within that body is running the
city affairs for its political and pecuni-
ary benefit.
A. clash between Judge Scott and the
excise board is likely to land that body
in jail for contempt of court for refus-
ing to comply with the court’s order.
