Those papers that are in the habit of publishing a full account of weddings before they occur will soon be turning their attentions to hangings. ~ The Women’s Christian Temperance ' Union has declared that hard cider must be banished, and the crusade has begun on Long Island. Hard cider must go—on Long Island. Doctors say the grip is losing its grip, but those who have it say the doctors have already lost their grip. The organization of business men has started off auspiciously. Let us hope the interest will not die out with the old year. This town could turn a'handsome sum by placing an import duty on new newspapers. In case a compromise Senatorial can- didate is necessary the Connecticut Republicans ought to be able to find the megaphone range on Hon. E. J. Hill. _ Editor Troup should begin the new ‘f‘year aright by organizing a party to revive the silver question. The Norwalk city council have com— pleted their labors for the year ’98. Bates suggested in answer, that Street Commissioner Wardwell’stiine did not expire until his successor had been appointed. Councilman Meeker read a long list of names of persons who for diversified causes had asked that their taxes be abated. The aggregate amount set against the names was over $400, vary- ing in amounts from eighty cents to $92, the latter being charged to the Susan St. John estate. The latter provoked considerable discussion which developed the fact that several unsuccessful attempts have been made to collect the same. Meeker: “I don’t think the property is hers.” Gregory: Whose the devil is it then? Burr: She has only a. life lease, and I is not collectable. ” Gregory: “Lawyer Hurlbutt tells me that it is, and besides, if the property is put up at auction to satisfy a tax lien, I know parties who stand ready to bid on it.” Councilman Burr moved that the taxes on the entire list with the ex- ception of the Susan St. John estate and the Jerome Paper Co. be abated, and that the two latter be referred for further investigation, and it was so voted. Councilman Bates moved that the Council adjourn, and before the Mayor could put the motion, councilman Gregory asked, “Adjourn till when?” And the board adjourned, till when?
