New York, Sept. 10.-—Martin Thorn
and Mrs. Augusta Nack will be sepa—
rately tried for the murder of William
Guldensuppe.
District Attorney Olc-ott and District
Attorney Youngs both think in that
way there will be fewer chances for
outwitting justice.
In all probability Thorn will be tried
first. The prosecution feels that it has
the stronger case against Thorn, be-
cause of his confession to his friend,
John Gotha. ‘
,If Thorn is convicted the district at-
torneys believe that their chances of
convicting Mrs. Nack will be so much
stronger.
It is generally admitted that the case
against Mrs. Nack is founded very
much more on circumstantial evidence
than the case against Thorn.
Even though Thorn is convicted, it is
by no means certain, it is admitted,
that the jury will find Mrs. Nack guilty
of one of the most atrocious crimes of

iGotha, to whom Thorn confessed. He
lis in hiding at present, and only the
idistrict attorney of New York knows

It is an open secret that the district
attorney looks upon G'otha as a star
witness and that he is taking no chances
of his being tampered with or weaken-
ing.
Gotha next Wednesday ’will appear
from his hiding place for the first time
since he was hurried from the city after
making his affidavit.
Meanwhile the prosecution is hard at
work picking up the little ends of its
case.

A piece of plaster of paris was also
found under the bathtub. A bullet had
evidently been sent through it, and the
hole corresponds with that in the wall.
This discovery is considered strongly
corroborative of Thorn’s confession in
Qotlia, especially since the discovery of
Grocer Burgess. who sold twu pounds
of plaster of paris to a man Strongly
resembling Thorn.
District Attorneys Olcott and Young;
profess that they do not care wheth {r
the head is found or not, but the -
Queens county authorities are still
searching for it.
Mr. Olcott says he has no doubt that
the Queens cpuuty grand jury will find

Frans Pulszky Dead. .
Budapest, Sept. 10.—-Franz Pulszky,
the archaeologist and publicist, is dead.
He was born in 1814, came of an old
family of Polish immigrants, accom—
»panied Kossuth to America and fought
with Garibaldi. In collaboration with
his wife he wrote a book on his Ameri-
can experiences entitled “White, Red,
Black.”
The Unkindest Cut of All.
San Francisco, Sept. 10.—The National
Sporting club has wired “Kid” McCoy
challenging him to met Joe Walcott in
this city. If McCoy does not care to ac-
cept the offer is open to Tommy Ryan.
Any weight is acceptable to Walcott’s
manager, Tom O’Rourke. It looks now
as if the Walcott—Layigne match is off.

A “’lfe Murderer Dead.
Mount Holly. N. J., Sept. 10.—James
Robinson, who on the night of Aug. 3
brutally murdered his Wife by cutting
her throat at. their home at Fieldsboro,
near Bordentown, died in the county
jail here. After the murder of his wife
Robinson attempted suicide by slashing
his throat with the razor.

Nominee Bryan’s Heroic Work

Emporia, Kan., Sept. 10.—-The head
end collision on the Atchison, Topeka
and Santa Fe railroad proves to have
been the worst disaster that has occur-
red“0n that system in many years. Ten
persons were killed outright or 'soon
died‘ of their injuries and 15 others were
more or less injured. One or two of the
injured may succumb. That the wreck
did not result more seriously seems mi-
raculous.
The wrecked trains were the fastest
in the service—the fast mail, the east
bound and the California and Mexico
express, west bound. Each was running
at the rate of 40‘mi1es an hour or (over.
The wreck occurred at 7:30 o’clock
three miles east of Emporia, on a small
culvert that crossed a dry stream. The
culvert was not more than 10 feet wide,
and the foremost engine of the west
bound train had spanned it when the
collision occurred. The embankment ap-
proaches to this culvert were about 10
feet high. This added to the danger.
\Villia’m J. Bryan Interviewed.
YVilliam J. Bryan was interviewed by
a reporter as to his experience in the
collision: “I have traveled thousands
upon thousands of miles on railroads.
and I never was in a wreck before. I
did not feel the shock very severely
where I was, but from the way things
looked I cannot for the life of me see
why we were not all killed. The scene
here presented is the most terrime I
have ever seen. It has madc an impres—
sion on me that cannot l'iave me during
my lifetime.”

The witch was caused by a failure to
deliver an order from the train dis»
patcher. The conductor of the east
bound train was ordered at Emporia tr
meet and pass the California liter at
Lang. seven miles east. An order sen.

livered, and be supposed he was to pass
at Emporia. Each train was hurrying,-
—one to Emporia, the other to Lang—
and met at full speed on the main line.
The California train was almost an
hour late. The west bound train car-
ried eight passenger coaches, and all
were crowded.
No \Varning Signal.
The conductor and brakeman were
getting their lanterns ready for Em-
poria, only three miles away. .There
was no warning signal. The west
bound train Was going around a slight
curve when it met the fast mail. The
shock of the collision was followed by
the explosion of the engine boilers.
The lights Went out, and those who
were in the first coach in the west
bound train were left in total darkness,
while all the coaches- were filled with
steam and smoke.
The west bound train was drawn by
two locomotives, and when they struck
the fast mail all three of the engine
boihers exploded and tore a hole in the
track so deep that the smoking car of
the west bound train went on top of the
wreck of the tlu'ee engines and two
mail cars and balanced there without
turning over. Those in this car who
escaped through the windows came
very near turning the car over, in
which event the mortality would have
been much greater, as this car soon
caught fire from the exploded engines
underneath it and burned to ashes in
short time. ' '
