A GALLOWS HILL ROBBERY.
An Italian Held Up Near Westfleld, N. J”
and Despoiied of His Savings.
Plainfleld, Sept. 2,—Gallow’s Hill, be-
‘tween Westfield and Cranford, whose
summit was the scene of hangings in
Revolutionary, times, and on which
there stands a sturdy old oak on which
a. British spy was hanged to death, was
today the scene of a daring highway
robbery.
, Antonio Paguise, an Italian, who lives
in Westfield and who works in Cran-
ford, was walking along that way to-
day. When he reached the road at the
summit of the hill, which is shaded by
thick underbrush, two men jumped out
into the center of the mad. One of
them grasped him around the body and
held his hands fast.
The other struck him a-blow in the
face, knocking him to the ground and
partially stunning him. Then, while
one sat on his stomach and held his
hands, the other tore off the clothes
around his body to get at the belt in
which Pagui’se carried' his savings,
amounting to $260. The money was in
$10 and $20 bills.
.Having secured it, the highwaymen
kicked and pounded him so that he was
unable to give chase. He was left in a
dazed condition lying in the roadway,
while the desperadoes disappeared in
the woods.
Paguise lay in the roadway for a few
minutes, but finally revived sufficiently
‘ to get on his feet and yell for help.
There are no houses near the scene of
the hold up. and his yells were not re-
sponded to. Then Paguise walked back
to Westfield. He reported the hold up
to Constable Hart, and said that he
recognized the two highwaymen as
Nicola Cuppola, a driver of a Cranford
beer wagon, and an Italian known as
Big Joe, who lives in Westfield. He
said that he knew both men well, hav-
ing met them at Italian resorts in
Westfleld. They knew that he had a
large sum of money on his person, as
he intended to sail for Italy in a few
weeks, and had been saving for that
purpose for two years. The police in
the neighborhood are looking out for
the robbers.

Drowned While Bathing.
‘New York, Sept. 2,—The body of a
drowned man was found today in the
North river off One Hundred and Fifty-
third street. The police of the West
One Hundred and Fifty-third Street
station were notified. The police
there had received word that John J.
Mitchell iof 2160 Lexington avenue was
missing. The man’s son, Joseph Mitch-
ell, was summoned and identified the
body as that of his father. Mitchell is
thought to have been drowned while
bathing.
{- Lanrier and the Pope.
Montreal, Sept. 2.——Touching upon his
‘visit to the pope, the Canadian premier.
Sir Wilfred Laurier, said today: “I
could not go to France without going
also to Italy to pay homage to the chief
pastor of our religion, the religion in
'which I desire to live, the religion in
‘which I hope to die. Leo XIII is not
firmly a saint. He is also a grand states-
man. I was overjoyed to notice within
the frail body of this old man such re-
markable mental activity.”

Paris, Sept. 2.——President Faure, re-
ferring in an interview to his visit to
Russia, is quoted as saying everything
passed off wonderfully-well and that
one could not dream of anything better.
Admirable de Courtille, in an interview
on the same subject said, “The czar
upon several occasions expressed to me
the happiness he felt at signing the
treaty of alliance."

Negroes Not “ranted at Elwood, Ind.
Elwood, Ind., Sept. 2.—The negroes
residing in Elwood have been warned
to leave, and serious trouble is threat-
ened if they are not gone by the mid-
dle of this week. On numerous occa—
sions during the past 12 years colored
people have made efforts to establish
permanent residences here, but were in-
variably driven away.
Comptroller Eckels’ Trip.
Helena, Mon., Sept. 2.-——Comptroller
of the Currency James H. Eckeis has
arrived here from the east en route for
‘the Yellowstone National park, where
he will spend ten days. From here he
{goes to the park, then to Butte and to
Salt Lake City and thence on a hunting
trip in the mountains of Colorado.

Emma Davis Homeward Bound.
San Francisco, Sept. 2.—Little Emma
Davis, the English girl who was taken
from her home by E. A. Tubbs and his
wife and treated almost as a slave on.

Edward Bellamy Going West.
Chicopee, Mass, Sept. 2.-—Edward Bel-
lamy, the author, will soon move from
this city to Denver, with his family.
Mr. Bellamy's health has been poor for
some time, and his friends think that ,
the change of climate will restore him
to good health.
Mr. Bitter Declines. .
Reading, Pa., Sept. 2.—It is stated
that Mr. Ritter, the nominee of the
Democratic state convention for auditor
general, has telegraphed Chairman Gar-
man that he had been nominated with-
out his consent and declined to run.
Arizona Druggist Killed by Tramps.
Phenix, A. ,T., Sept. 2.——Word was re-
ceived today by the sheriff from Gila
Bend that tramps robbed the drug store
of John Pratt and stabbed the pro-
prietor, killing him. There is no clew
to the murderers.
McLaurin’s Majority 10,052.
Columbia, S. C., Sept. 2.—The latest
returns in the senatorial primary elec-
tion held in South Carolina yesterday
'give McLaurin 19,852. Evans 6,230, Irby
3,570, a majority of 10,052 for McLaurin.
Outbreak on Malabar Coast.
Madras, Sept. 2.—An outbreak is re-
ported among the mollahs, or fanatical
Mohammedans, of the Malabar coast.
It has not yet assumed serious propor-
tions. -

"Down With England!” In Paris.
London, Sept. 2.—A special dis-
patch from Paris published here today
says that cries of “Down with Eng-
land!" were raised outside the British
embassy in Paris last night because
that building was not illuminated in
honor of the return of President Faure
to the French capital after his visit to
Russia.
Decorated by the Khedive.
Topeka. Sept. 2.——E. C. Little, private
secretary of Governor Leedy, has been
decorated by the khedive of Egypt with
the insignia of the Grand Cordon
of the Imperial Order of Mejidieh of the
Ottoman Empire. The decoration was
accompanied by a certificate from the
sultan of Turkey at Constantinople.
The Alliance at Queenstowu.
Queenstown, Sept. 2.—The United
States training ship AllianCe is detained
here owing to adverse winds. She ex-'
perienced very heavy weather while on
her way from Cherbourg to Gibraltar,
necessitating making this port. The
Alliance is coaling and will probably
resume her voyage tomorrow.
Lightning Killed the Mother.
Monroe, Ga., Sept. 2.—Mrs. Guthrie,
wife of Luther Guthrie, a prominent
citizen of Walnut Grove, was killed by
lightning. She had one of her children
in her arms when the. bolt fell. Al-
though Mrs. Guthrie was killed instant-
ly, the child was merely burned and
was not injured seriously.
Whaling Schooner's Catch.
Port Townshend, Wash., Sept. 2.-
The schooner Emma has arrived from
Marzovia. Alaska, with the season’s
catch, as follows: Four beaver, 43 red
fox, 19 sea otter and 1,300 pounds of
whalebone.
White Cappers Held For Trial.
Ridgeway, S. C., Sept. 2.—Twenty-
four residents of Fairfield county,
charged with whipping and driving out
Mormon elders and their converts, have
been bound over for trial.
Landslide on Northern Pacific.
Tacoma, Sept. 2.——A big landslide oc-
curred at tunnel No. 4 or. the Northern
Pacific several miles west of the summit
of the Cascades. All trains were de-
layed.
