A CUBAN STORY VIA MADRID.

MADRID, Feb. 19.—~A dispatch received
here from Havana. says that it is reported
there that Dr. Zertucha. Maceo’s physi-
cian, who accompanied him at the time
the insurgent leader met his death and
led the general and his party into ambush,
has been killed for revenge.
Zertucha‘s Treachery.
Zertucha’s life was full of treasonable
and treacherous acts. Although the Span-
iards have managed to prevent the details
of the assassination of Maceo from being
fully divulged, it is almost certain that the
great Cuban leader was led into an ambush
through the deceit of Zei‘tuclia and then
shot down in cold blood.
After the killing of Maceo the dishon-
ored Zcrtucha was permitted to go free by
the Spaniards, and it was said and gener-
ally believed that- liis pockets were well
lined wis h the gold of the Castilians.

retribution would surely follow the doctor.
It is known that he livedin constant dread
of being killed.
While General Campos was captain gen~
oral of the island prominent Spaniards ap-
proached him with the proposition that
the war would be ended very quickly if
Maceo and Gomez should be killed by
somebody within the Cuban ranks. Cam-
pos spurned the proposition. When chler
came to the island, be seized the idea joy-
fully. Gomez wns aimed at as the first
man, but it was found that the commander
in chief placed too many safeguards about
his person.
When Maceo invaded the province of
Pinar del Rio for the second time, a plan
to assassinate him was arranged in the
palace at Havana. Maximo Zertucha, the
surgeon, was chosen to carry‘out the plan.
First, Barrera, the chief of police, found a
way of communicating with Zertucha, and
later the traitor had communications with
the Marquis of Ahumada through Colonel
Tort, who before the war was an intimate
friend of Zertucha, and to whom, as ar-
ranged previously, the traitor surrendered
in San Felipe.
General Maceo crossed the military line,
or trocha, between Marill and Majana, at
the former point, at 8 o’clock on the night
of Dec. 4 of last year. Maceo was accom-
panied by a part of his general staff, Gen-
erals Miro and Diaz, Colonels Nodarse and
Gordon, Majors Piedra .Tuztiz, Ahumada
and Penalver, Captain Jauvenal and Dr.
Zcrtucha. - ‘
How lliaceo Was Entrapped.
While reconnoltering under the guidance
of Zertucha, who knew the country well,
Maceo and a small party, among whom
was a son of General Gomez, took a route
through a canefield. This was at the sug-
gestion of Zertiicha. They fell into an am-
bush of 500 Spaniards commanded by
Major Cirujed‘i.
“If you SI'l‘ tider,” cried a. voice, “we
offer you you; life and an honorable
treaty.”
“Viva Cuba. libre!" was Maceo’s an-
swer. Then the butchery began. Gomez
was wounded and fell before Maceo, but
Miro escaped. A body of patriots came up
after the killing had been done and drove
the Spaniards off. The bodies of Maceo
and young Gomez, who killed himself with
the last bullet of his revolver, had been
stripped of clothing and jewelry by the
Spaniards.
The cavalry of Major Cirujeda were
’pursued by the infuriated Cubans nearly
to Punta. Brave. Zertucha alone in all
Maceo’s party was not. wounded. He was
taken to San Felipe and turned over to
Colonel Tort, who afterward released him.
It is said that $50,000 was the price of
Maceo’s life.
Zertucha belonged to all political parties
.in Cuba. He had been a bandit in the
Vuelta Abajo, and his record was very dis-
trusted Zertucha so much. It was always
inexplicable that Maceo kept the physician
on his staff for so“ long a time, notwith-
standing the warnings given to him.
Maceo said that Zertucha’s-fault was that
he drank too much.
Zertucha issued a long statement, in
which he tried to show that Macao was
killed in battle, and the physician also hit-
terly assailed the honor of the Cuban lead-
ers. ‘
\Vllson Has Accepted.
WASHINGTON, Feb. ' 19.—Postmaster
General Wilson this afternoon announced
that he had accepted the presidency of the
Washington and Lee university at Lexing-
ton, Va. The formal tender was made to
him a. week ago at a meeting of the board
of trustees. The board fixed July 1 as the
date on which the new president assumes
the chair.
Five Months For Jens.
LONDON, Feb. 19. —Osmond Walter J efi's,
the old employee of the Pacific Steam
Navigation company who disappeared with
£2,000 belonging to the company while
on route to Mexico, via the United States,
and who wds arrested at Liverpool on
Monday last, was sentenced today to five
months’ imprisonment at hard labor.
Condition of Senator Kenney.
DOVER, Del., Feb. 19.—United States
Senator Kenney, who is ill with the grip
at his home, in this city, is recovering.
He was able to sit up today and is now
, considered out of danger.
