a surgical Operation for double hernia.

James Hall got the City Hotel, is 12
years of age to-day and will celebrate
the event by giving a party to his

The ladies of the Norwalk Yacht club
met at the club house Wednesday at-
ternoon and played Whist. Mrs. Ed-
ward Knapp succeeded in winning the
first prize and Mrs. James Golden the
consolation.

The “smoker” at the Norwalk Yacht
club last evening, was one of the most
enjoyable yet given'by that popular or!
ganization. The large reception room
was crowded with members and their
friends. and the entertainment commit-
tee succeeded in‘more than enterta’n-
ing the guests. A quartette composed
of Messrs. Hatch, Nash, Whittaker and
Wherle, sang several excellent songs,
while Messrs. Harry Pepper,Whittaker,
Whole, Nash, Hatch delighted all with
their choice solos. Heibert R. Smith
gave several recitations, his “Casey at
the bat,” bringing down the house-
Commodore Sanford presented the
prizes won on Labor Day. the same
beinghandsome pennants. A special
Tramway car brought the party home
at midnight.

TWO BANKS SUSPEND.

BUFFALO, Oct. 16.—The Bank of Com-
merce_oi this city closed its doors today
pending an examinatidn by the‘banking
department. Withdrawals from the bank-
ha 6‘ been recentlquuite large, and at a
m ting of the board of directors last night
it was deemed expedient to suspend and
place the ,bank in the hands of the bank-
ing department. The directors, however,
expect that the bank may be able to re‘
sume in a short time.
The Bank of Commerce was organized
in July, 1873. and is quoted as having a
surplus of $300,000 and a capital of $200,-
000. The officers are: President, George
W. Miller; vice president. William H.
Gardner; cashier, William 1?. Reed; di-
rectors, John Tillinghast, George W. Mil-
ler,‘James F. Chard, William H. Gardner,
William H. H. Newman, William H. Grat-
wick. _
cashier Reed resigned a fortnight ago,
ill health being given as the cause of his
retirement.
An Illinois Bank Fails.
CHICAGO, Oct. 16. —The Second National
bank, the oldest financial institution of
Rockford, Ills., did not open its doors to-
day, having gone into voluntary liquida-
tion. The result is due to a steady shrink-
age in deposits since July 1. The ofiicers
of the clearing house, who met last night‘,‘
say that depositors will be paid in full
and the bank will ultimately reorganize.
Reoekver Spencer Relieved.
ATLANTA, Oct. 16.—Samuel Spencer 02
New York, president of the Southern rail-
way. was relieved from acting as receiver
or the Georgia Pacific Railway company
by Judge W. T. Newman in the United
States court for the northern district of
Georgia. The release was made on mo-
tion of Mr. Leslie Ryan of New York,-so-
licitor for Mr. Spencer.
Trouble In Balnchistan.
BOMBAY, Oct. 16.——A section of the
Narri tribe of Afghans has attacked the
_ Sanari station on the Quetta railway in
Baluchlstan. killing the entire staff except
the station master, who lost an arm. A
detachmentof troops is held in readiness
to occupy Sanari. It is supposed that the
trouble arose from a frontier dispute.
Cattle‘Lost at. Sea.
HALIFAX, Oct. 16..—-The cattle steamer
Lord Erne, nine days out from Baltimore
for London, with 403 head of cattle, put in
here today for repairs. The Lord Erne en-
countered a hurricane on Monday and
Tuesday, during which she lost 130 head of
cattle and received considerable damage.
Two Girls Burned to Death.
ST. JOHN, N. B., Oct. 16.—A dispatch
received here irom Upper Gagetown today
says that two domestics. named Amelia
Appleby and Sylvester Wright, the latter
colored, were burned to death in a fire
which destroyed Henry Esterbrook’s dwell-
ing and outbuildings - "
Ahlysterious Murder.
‘ COVINGTON, Ky., Oct. l6.—A mysterious
murder occurred here, Frank Kennedy be-
ing found on Willow street with his throat
out. The supposed murderer. who was
afterward arrested, gave his name as J. T.
Canary. Both were strangers, and Canary
was very drunk.
