I The spirit of repudiation and anarchy has run riot in the Chicago Convention. - There is not a single paragraph in the platform that gives any recognition to national honor or to the integrity of American citizenship. Repudiation runs through every paragraph relating to money, and anarchy is blended with the old States’ Rights idea that the greatest Republic of the earth,:shall be powerless to maintain :law andfiorder within its dominion. Such a platform logically commences its declaration of principal withla delib- erate falsehood when it declares that the act of 1873 was passed and silver de- monetised “without the knowledge or approval of the American people.” That act was deliberately and patient- ly considered in. three different sessions of Congress covering a period ofjnearly three years and necessarily embracing two distinct Congresses. After it had been proposed and discussed without final passage, a new Congress was elec- ted with that discus lion fresh before the people; that new Congress resumed the consideration of the measure and final- ly passed the bill, and with the ap- proval and suppport of most of the Sen- ators from the silver Statesfincluding a number who are dow blatant free sil- verites. To declare that silver was demone- 'tized “without the knowledge or ap- ' proval of the American people” is so consciously false that it places the authors of this platform, and the con- vention that adopted it, in absolute disgrace in the judgment of. every in- telligent and fair minded American citizen. In point of fact, there was no demonetization of silver in 1873 because there was no sillver to demonetize, as legal tender silver dollars had been out of circulation for nearly forty years; and the act was more elaborately dis- cussed in Congress and by the press, and its aims and purposes more gener- ally underszoud by the people, than is common in the adoption of measures of the gravest moment. The resolution declaring against gold monometallism is also based on absolute falsehood. This country has never had gold monometallism, and it maintains to-day quite as much silver as a circu- lating medium as it has of' gold. The gold standard of value is maintained here, as it has ever been maintained since the Republic was founded, and as it is maintained in every civilized gov- . ernment of the world; and the Only complaint of the free silver fanatics is that the friends of an honest financial policy are unwrlling to coin 53 cents’ worth of silver and stamp it as a dollar, and compel the government to keep “it at par With gold by paying the differ- ence in gold when demanded. The aim of the falsehood is to destroy the ac- cepted standard of value in the civilized world. The utterly false declaration against gold monometallism is logically followe d by a demand for the“fi'ee and unlimitr d coinage of gold and silver at the present legal ratio of 16 to 1 without waiting for the aid or consent of any other nation,” and the demand for a 53-cent dollar is as logically followed by the open re; u- diation of our national obligations in the section requiring that the option of the holders of our bonds to be paid in gold or silver coin shall be withdrawn. The monster of repudiation is also dis- tinctly set forth in the paragraph de- nouncing the issue of bonds to main- tain the national credit. Beginning with deliberate falsehocd and gravitating to unmistakable repu- diation by the demand that public and private obligations shall be paid in money of one-half of the value on which the contracts were ‘based, what assurance would the country or world have that, with the success of’ repudia- tion to the extent of one-half the value of our obligations, the repudiationists would there end the work, 'of,‘ fraud? There is nota feature of the Chicago platform on the question of finance, that is not open, nudisguised repudia- tion, with falsehood summoned to fur- nish the: only excuses which can be' of- fered for it. ' l The assault upon the Supreme Court for its refusal to sustain an income tax, . and the demand that the Constituticn, Hood’s Pills SickHeadache. ascents. .— shall be changed to permit such tax to be levied, are in perfect accord with the repudiation features of the platform which precede it. It is a reckless as. sault upon thrift in every section and aims a deathblow at industrial advance- ment in the regions where capital is most needed, and where it could be freely commanded by public and pri- vate integrity. , , After repiidiation and agrarianism had been formally commended to the American people by the platform, it 'was only a short step thence to the slimy embrace of the Anarchist. The denunciation of the national govern- ment for maintaining law and order within its dominion, is simply an echo of the Anarchists who hurled bombs at the guardians of the peace in the Chi- cago riots, and who were pardoned by Governor Altgeld, who is one of the master spirits of the Chicago Conven‘icn The paragraph relating to the mainte- nance of peace by the government is a declaration in favor of red-handed anar- chy and none will misunderstand it. The platform as a whole, stamps its authors as a National council of des- tructionists. It is without a redeeming feature to commend it to pa‘riotic citi‘ zone of any political faith. It is a proc- lamation of organized repudiation, agrarianism and anarchy, and should political affiliations, to heroic battle against the triumph of a madness that is as deadly in its aim as was the mad- ness of s cession in 1860. —o—>— Royal lien-clinches: Among the crowned heads who take the greatest interest in charity are the King of Italy and the Dowager Empress of Russia. At Christmas and Easter time the former gives away thousands of pounds to charity, and not very long ago insisted that a court ball should be abandoned and the money distributed among the poor. The greatest work she has done is un- doubtedly the erection by law, but on her initiative, of foundling hospitals in numerous parts of the vast Russian Empire.
