The apprehension to which Charles Lin-
ford had given expression proved to be only
too well founded. In less than a month from
theday on which the above conversation took

Charles, with a thousand other bands, was
without work or wages.
Although Charles Lyn'ford had anticipated
this, yet it was a fearful blow when it came,
and he again returned home in deep sorrow.
He briefly explained to his wife the terrible-
