A Sad Tale of the S011.
Under the above heading, the Baltimore
Sun of the 16111 1111. contains the following :
“ The schooner Susie P. Oliver, 01‘ Bangor,
arrived at Kerr's wharf on Thursday evening,
from East Harbor, ’l‘urk‘s Island. with salt
In October, on the voyage from Georgetown,
S. 0., to Gaudaloupe, W. 1., the schooner
had 14 very rough experience. When ten

account of one of the saddest and most

Death is the common lot of all mankind.
Some time each one of us must (lie, and the
thought occurs, will death be painful ? That
is a question which interests us all. We
know we must die, and we doubtless wish
we might be assured that our death will be'
painless We have seen others die. Some
passed away as easily, apparently, as the
child falls asleep. These, we can easily be-
lieve, find no pain in dying. Others have
died rejoicing that they were going home,
evidently experiencing no pain. If we
could all feel assured that we should each
die in that way, death would be robbed oi at
least some of its terrors. All death-beds are
not scenes of tranquility or rejoicing. b‘ul-

Apparently it is. Certain it is that the
struggle up to death’s door is one full of
pain and agony. But are we sure that in

that,as death creeps over the prostrate fortu,
a blissful antethesis, cutting 011’ all sense of
pain. makes the last moment of existence one
of infinite rcliet',11nd the more desirable in
that it. brings that relief ?
There are some things known in regard to
the act of (13111:; 3'-' hich seem to indicate thtt
d-1dh itself is not painiul, but, on the con.-
trury, pzrhups pleasurable rather than other-
wise. Those persons who have been brought
t1 death’s 'door by drowning, strangling, or
freezing, but who have subsequently been
brought back to consciousness, say that they
sutfered at. first, but after that all sense of
prin disappeared, and then the sensation was
rather pleasurable. Michel dc Montaigne,
the eminent French author, by 21 severe acci—
dent 33'as nearly killed. Of his sensations as
he seemed to approach death he says:

upon my lips, and l strut my 03 on to help,
methought, to thrust it out, and took a
pleasure in languishing ..nd letting myself

ficially floated upon my soul, as tender and

and pleasure that people are sensible of when
