Eli-Mayor Reed, of Cannon’s Station, has
discoverd a feldspar quarry on his property.
This quarry lies close to the railroad and
hence is more valuable than one more re—
mote. We understand that Mr. Reed has
leased this mine to parties in New Jersey
and that steps will be taken immediately fer
its development.
The Rev. Mr. Thompson commenced his
pastorate'of the Congregational church on
Sunday last. His family will probably arrin
in Wilton during the present week.
Our churches are making arrangements for
the usual Christmas festivities.
RIDGEFIELD.
The venerable host and hostess of the
Ressequic House, returned from quite an
extended excursion last week. Tue aged
landlord now in his ninetieth year, after an
unusually active “summer campaign” at his
popular hostlery, thought he would like to
take a rest and see a little more of the active
and progressive world about him. Nol
having visited Saratoga for thirty years, he
thought he would like to revisit that noted
-watering place and view the growth and
improvements of the city. So after spending
a week there he returned via the Hoosic
Tunnel, the “great bore" that has so many
years occupied _public attention, and has
heavily taxed the financial resources of th-
Old Bay State. He halted also to note the
rapid improvements in Norwalk on his return
trip.
Last week, “Phillis,” the renowned cook
of the Ressequie House, for the past half
century or more, took her vacation also and
visited Norwalk, Bridgeport and other Cities
of the shore and plain, preparatory to the
coming summer season of 1881.

ladies were standing near by him. We

Mrs. Julia Pennoyer, who has just return
-.d from the Pacific coast, speaks of her
year’s movements in that locality. Her
.leadquarters were in Oakland, near San
Francisco, at the house of her brother, Mr.
Edwin Adams, formerly of Westport. While
at Los Angelos she saw orange and lemon
groves which had been bilten by frost—an
recurrence not heard of before in 30 years.
She visited Portland, Oregon, and while
here was the go est of Mr. and Mrs. J. W.
dill, also once of Westport, and she is re-
ported to have done some very efficient
church work. She was able to show the
good people there that not all the evils in
reation emanate from the East, and she
orings home with her the conviction that
«no church institutions on that coast are

aid. She was pleased with all she 'saw, and
interested by the magnificent scenery which
California offers, but after all was glad to

Change in the manner of conducting the
trade. Railroads, recently constructed from
Rio Janeiro, bring the coffee more speedily
from the plantations, and steamers, which
haVe supplanted sailing vessels, have greatly
anortened the trip from Brazil to this country.
The trade in coffee, in other words, has gone
through the same secular change as the trade
in tea. The day for great firms buying by
the ship-load and carrying great stocks has
passed, Orders by cable, shipments by steam
and purchases by job lots have taken the
place of the slow but princely methods of a
few years back. The recent failures in the
Coffee trade ,in New York in their ultimate
causes are closely analagous to the failures
in tea a few years back

Thousands of dollars have been sunk
within the last few years in in—Shore planting
of oySIers of Milford, the bivalves in nearly
every instance being destroyed by the wash-
ings of mud and sand upon the beds in heavy
storms. One man prescvered through suc-
cessive failures and finally tried deep water
planting. This has proved so great a success
that he has already made up for the greater
part of the loss that he sustained in planting
in shallowwaler. The success of the deep
water planting has been so fully demonstrat-
ed that it is thought the whole territory along
the Sound will in time be taken up for plant.

John I. Divenport, who has been here
seeking new evidence in the matter of the
Morey letter, has obtained some important
information relative to democratic frauds
prior to the last campaign. He has never
abandoned the search for the 90,000 fraudu-
lent naturalization papers issued by the dem-
ocrats in New York in 1868 under the Tilden-
Tweed aupsices. Davenpmt is said to have
now obtained positive proof of the disposi—
tion of 24,000 of these fraudulent papers.
One lot of five thousand is said to havo been
sold foradollar apeice to a member of a
former democratic national commitlee for
use in Connecticut. Davenport is said to be
able to produce the witness .who negotiated
the sale, and will soon make his discovrry

Indianapolis had been pronounced insane
because of a certain novel idea when he had

John R. Davidson left Norwich, Conn.,
twunty-cight years ago to sail the sea and
make his fortune or never to return to his
father’s roof. He landed in New York last
week and at once directed his steps to the
old home in Connecticut, from which be had

Shoemaker." He entered the shop, found
his father. bargained for a pair of boots,

had seen his boy, and talked vivaciously of
him; and when the middle-aged man de—
clared himself to be the son, the father was

It is stated that a prominent citizen of‘
GalVeston, was brought home very late in a
comatose condition. His terrified wife,
thinking lt was apoplexy, sent for the family
physician. The doctor examined the patient
carefully and then directed that the clergy-
man be sent for, In a few minutes the
spiritual adviser was bending over the couch
of the dying man. Finally the clergyman
