required by this act. '

This act requires that the party shall break
or plow five acres the first year, five acres
the second year, and to cultivate to crop
or otherwise the five acres broken the first
year; the third year he musficultivate the
five acres broken the second year and plant
in timber, seeds or cuttings the five acres
broken the first year; and the fourth year to
plant in timber, seeds or cuttings the remain-
ing five acres; that not less than twenty-
seven hundred trees must be planted on each
acre, and that, at the time of making proof,
there shall be then growing at least six
hundred and seventy five living and thrifty
trees. The cost of taking under this act is
$14 for anything over eighty acres up to one
hundred and sixty. and as for eighty acres
or less. No residencezis required upon a
timber claim. Young trees, seeds and cut-
tings start and grow very easily upon the
prairies,and this is becoming quite a favorite
way of securing government land. ,

There is yet quite a considerable amount
of Government land in Knox, Holt, Pierce
and Antelope counties. The most of it can
only be secured under the homestead,
pre-emption and timber culture laws. As
actual residence is required under the first
two of these, the land where taken so far has
a resident, for the most part, on every quar-
ter section. In this way schools and many

 

law. We need it in the family, the, state,
the teaching and religion. We can neither
afford to abolish from the household, the
rod, whose sparing ,spoils the child, nor
from the halls of justice the sword which
is a terror to evils doers, nor from the pul-
