The good temperance ladies petitioned the
Hub Mayor not to offer wine at the City’s re-
ception to the Nation‘s lfeed: and the bluff
mayor replies that custom and usage sanctions
it, and he most certainly shall have wine of-
fered the City’s guests. If no one but Pres-
ident Hayes partakes of wine, however, Bos-
ton will have no wine bill to pay as he is a
total abstainer.
Cnxx‘css or Trim—Several changes in the
time table of the N. Y. & N. H. Railroad,
were made yesterday. The time table will he
found on our fourth page. . .
Superintendent Hyatt has changed the
Hozse Railway time table to correspond, and
has also added a number of trips for the sum-
mer, with a view- to the better accommoda-
tion of the public.
Mr. Eli Northrop was quite seriously hurt,
on Thursday afternoon last. a While riding
homcward with his wife from the village, his
horse took fright at a man sitting by the
road-side on the hill near to J. F. Ruscoe’s,
Unionville, and-turning sharply around in-
stantly turned the wagon bottom‘side up.
Mrs. Northrop luckily escaped injury, but
Mr. N. received severe injuries. It was sup-
posed that several'of his ribs were broken;
but we learn to day that such is' not the case,
and that he is rapidly convalescina.
The wife of James Golden, Esq, the senior
editor of the Sentinel, died last Wednesday
after an illness of most intense sufferingwhich
she bore with heroic fortitude and- Christian
resignation. It was not our pleasure to have-
known the deceased, but from a friend who
knew her intimately well, we learn that Mrs.
G. was a very superior lady of rare loveliness
of character and as a wrfe and mother, all that
could be looked for this side the Celestial
realms whither her pure spirit has taken its
flight. We know how utterly empty' would
be any mere words of sympathy extended to
our stricken brother new sitting in the shad-
ow of such an overwhelming grief. The stay
of his life, the joy and light of his home, the
mother of his helpless babe, so suddenly torn
from him by the relentless hand of death,
touches the heart so keenly, that we can only
proffer the poor tribute of our tears.
Master John Camp, only son of A. H.Camp
Esq, bad a very narrow escape on Friday
afternoon last, from the old, old story of toy-
ing with fire arms.‘ He and a gentleman
friend were comparing pistols, each snapping
the others supposing them to be unloaded but
young Camp’s when snapped by the friend,
unexpectedly went off and the ball passing
through his clothingploughed 'a furrow in
Johnny’s side, right over the heart; a half. ‘
inch or so more and it would very probably
have proved fatal. . He was, quite fortunately
more frightened than hurt. Can’t our youth
he prevailed upon to lay aside their pistols,~
shot guns, &c., this coming 4th. We are
sure that parents, friends and the community
generally would be much pleased, breathe
easier and have more a sense of securityI if
the boys would only taboo the use; of these
deadly weapons. ' '
The little five year old son of Editor By-
ington, who was recently bitten by' the Spitz
dog has had his wound healed in a very pleas-
ant manner. P. T. Barnum, Esq , on the
eve of his departure for Europe, presented
Master'Stewart with a dwarf donkey he re-~
cently imported from England—Eagle.
As several, in the neigborhood have con-
ceived ,the mistaken idea that we had import-
ed some new and rare eongeter whenever our
animal elevates his voice, while GrocersKee-
ler and, Raymond, Andrew Selleck and .Sev-
Inour Curtis have suspicion that George B.
Cholwell’s seventeen yearn-old peacock has
come to life again (after the , manner .of the
seventeen year locust) we suppose v may as
well state that our friend Barnum seeing
there were so many donkeys in the editorial
professibn and noting Our destitution in that'
particular, kindly donated our youngster the
dmkey. . ~

The “Ladies’ Own Sociable” closed the
season last Tuesday evening, with a most en:
joyable entertainment. . The farce of “Poor
Pillicoddy" Was performed early in the even-
ing,'by.membcrs of the Sociable, in a very
happy manner, creating much amusement and
eliciting rounds of applause. After the play
several hours were devoted to dancing for
which Wannemacher furnished music.
D'Artois furnished light rEfreshmcnts in the
ante-room for such as desired. The company
was somewhat larger than usual,. and the
entertainment passed off to the delight of all.
A decision has been rendered in the case of
Ebenezer W. Raymond vs. The Danbury dc
Norwalk Railroad, giving the plaintiff $5,300
danmges. Messrs. Wm. B. Smith and J. T.
Platt, of New Haven, were counsel for the
plaintiff, and Messrs. Lyman B. Brewster, of
New Haven, and C. G. Child, of Stamford,
for defense. ' It '11 be remembered that
Mr. Raymond, of ew York State, was ser-
iously injured while crossing the track on the
New Canaan road, near head of Main street,
some months since.
DIVIDEND—TM directors of the Fairfield
County National Bank have declared a semi-
annual dividend of four per cent.,
next Monday. ' '
The Bank of Norwalk has also declared a
semi-annual dividend of four per cent,. pay»
able July 2d; '
The Savings Bank will credit interest on
the lat of July at the rate of five per cent.,
for the past six months, and pay the same on
the 10th. . . ' ' ' *

A New Enterprise. 7 ~
Failing to get"'Glovcr' Sanford~ & Co.-, to
locate in Nonvalk, several of our citizens
have decided to build a new factory and carry
on the same business—wool hat- manufactur-
ing. It will be located at 'South Norwalk,
corner of Water and Tolles streets, near the
harbor, and, it is reported, :will‘be put up! in
forty days. It will be built of brick, two
stories and French roof,22x60. Several lead-
ing but manufaéthrers are engaged in the pre-
ject, who will no doubt push it forward to
successful completion.

The State Normal School.
-The_public examination at thezsmte Nor-
mal school at New. Britain, will take place
this year on Thursday, July 5th, one week
laterthan usual. The graduation 'exerciscs
and alumni meeting will occur on Friday, the
6th, and will be more than ordinarily inter-
esting. The class graduating this summer
numbers twenty-five members. The valedic-
torian is Miss Agnes Turnbull, of North
Manchester. The members of the class
selected to read essays on Commencement-
dayare Misses Cora Barnum, Libhie Cleve-
land,‘ Aleina Pratt, of Plainville, Miss Carlon,
of Hartford, and Mr. Roach. ‘ '

The people Of St. Mary's Society‘ are the
only ones having pluck enough to celebrate
the 4th.of July this year. They have engag-
ed the City Band. and will form a procession
at the’ church at 10 o’clock, a. m., and march
through‘some of our principal streets, and
then proceed to the Amphitheatre Grove,
where they will spend the day inrpie-nic
pleasures. The St. Mary, St. Joseph and
St. James, St. Vincent’de Paul, Children of
Mary, and Cadet Sooieties, and the'Sunday

two years ago, on the steamer Francis excur-
sion from Bridgeport to Washington, made
the chance acquaintance of a Masonic brother,
who introduced him to the Lodge at Alex-
andria of which W'ashington was Master and
which still holds among its relics the gavel
used by the Father of his Country, and the
apron presented him by Eafaycttc. Our
friend Sellcck was the recipient on St. J ohn’s
day, of a goblet, with ring encircling the
standard, uniquely carved out of red cedar,
cut from the‘only cedar tree and the, oldest
tree in the church yard, at Alexandria, where
worshippéd. 'The tree'was struck by light-
ning rechntly and a portion of the wood is
thus happily utilized. Itbears upon a silver}
