The large importing houses of fancy
wares show few signs of the hard times du-
ring the holiday season. To an accustomed
eye the stock may not seem so large as in
former seasons, . when money was rolling
about; but articles are more tasteful and se-
lect. Such as _cai‘.ieos, broiizes, and elegant
pieces of gold and silver ware were never be-
fore shown. The dealers say they have not
felt the hard times affect their custom, but
expect they will before long. As the next
thing 10 seeing beautiful things is to hear
about them, your readers may have some
euriosityto know what kind of gifts wealthy
New Yorkers made this season. The gem of
all the lovely obiects of “bigotry and virtue,”
is the veiled Cupid,.now on view in the gal-
lery of a house noted for its rarities. The
<:tatuc, by an Italian artist, is called “Hid-
.len love;” a charming figure, with head
iiirned aside, and arrows drooping. in the left
hand, a veil thrown over‘ the‘ face. The
charm of all is that the marble is colored in
the softest tints, the diinpled limbs have the
iiiiest rose tlcsli, tender as flesh ever is; the
eyes, a beautiful, roguish blue, beam through
the veil, which is wrought with the most ex-
.znisite art, till it looks like a film of white
erape flung over the lovely head, not half
concealing the brilliant roses on its check.
the statue was sold to a New York lady for
$13,000. The ladies, perhaps, will prefer to
war of a pair of solitaire diamond ear-rings

IVIUSTANGS.
A large crowd gathered yesterday on
Fourth street, in front of the court house,
attracted by the moving through the streets
of one of the old buildings from John Tay-
lor’s lot. The building was about fifty feet
long, had been mounted on , four wooden
truck wheels with a pair of wagon wheels in
'front, to which a team of six stout mules
were hitched. After many tugs the old
house started, the driver yelling and the mud ,
flying 1111 over the sidewalk, scattering the -
crowd and bespattering the Goddess of Lib-
erty on the dome of the court house. After
an hour’s time they succeeded in dragging the
building along about 150 feet. Within a few

and New York is the sewer through which it
