WESTPORT.

The shower of Tuesday night was terrific
in every sense, and brought to mind some
of the awful results our grandfathers used
to talk of before lightning rods, which are
very poor protectors, if truth be told, were

WINNIPAUK.

During the thunder storm on Tuesday

last one of the shade trees in front of the
Widow Aikcn’s residence was struck by
lightning, the electrical fluid passing down
its trunk tearing off the bark to the ground;
after ploughing up the ground it made con-
nection with the gas pipe and entered the
pantry in the rear part of the house knock-
ing some kerosene lamps around very indif-
ferentlyas to what results might follow.

partition it departed without further damage.
It also entered the Counting-room at Nor-
walk Mills and paid its respects to J. A. Os-
born; George Parrott and George Beecrolt,
also received slight shocks.

It is expected that the Silver Stream Pa-
per Mill will resume operations during this
week, after a stoppage of three or four
weeks, during which time they have been
busy putting in new machinery. They ex-
pect to make a superior quality of manilla
paper from jute'and other. like material.

sufficiently able to travel he will spend the

A young man in the employ of James
Sturges at Cannon’s Station broke his collar
bone by a fall from a horse.

invented. Lightning shafts came down in
many places shattering trees and in one
instance striking a house. The electric
fluid came in contact with two persons but
‘scared more than it hurt them. The rain,
8. little to late to help meadows, was great
and insures growing crops. Rain again on
Friday removed for the present all fear of
drouth or failing wells.

And it came to pass that after putting up
a big sign board on the depot road Which
scared many horses and excited some peo-
ple’s laughter, they went and took the. sign
down.

suggestive of pleasing memories, Mr. Mar-
vin has bllt recently returned .from an ex-
‘tended sojourn on the continent of Europe.
While‘abroad he made himself master of
several different languages, two of which he
spoke with the fluency of a native.

John Connolly who was found dead at
his residence Friday morning, was buried
in the Catholic cemetery Sunday afternoon.
There was a large attendance at the 'grave.
~ In Weston Tuesday night the lightning
struck the house of Mr. Horace B. Coley,
Mrs. Coley at the time was passing up
stairs and the lightning forced the lamp she
was carrying from her. hand and knocked
her down. She was not seriously injured:
A boy drawing cider in the cellar was
stunned, and moaned all night in conse-
quencc.

Sunday morning Rev. Dr. Sanderson
preached a sermon which was listened to
by a large congregation, on “The Prophet
who opened Heaven."
