neighbors, and to the disturbance of the
Sunday School Of Zion Church, who are

Gen. Frank P. Blair-died at his residence
in St. Louis on Thursday night last. He
will be remembered as an able volunteer
officer during the war and as being the Dem-
ocrat nominee for Vice President on the
ticket with Horatio Seymour for President
in 1868.

The twelfth volume of the revised edition
of Appleton’s American Cyclopacdia has
been delivered toisubscrihers. It contains
the following sketch of this town ':

ces, Norwalk, South Norwaik, Winnipauk,

the borough includes the city of South or-
walk (pop. 3,000), incorporated in 1 70.
There are four railroad stations. The Nor-
walk river empties into the sound at this
point, and a horse railroad connects Nor-
waik bridge and South Norwalk. Vessels
drawing six feet of water can reach the up-

Norwclk Savings Society.
We publish in another column the official
statement of the present condition of the
“Old and reliable” Norwalk Savings So-
ciety. It will be seen that the deposits foot
up considerable over $2,000,000, which is
certainly very remarkable for hard times,
and speaks volumes for the industry and
economy of our working classes and their
confidence in the old Savings Institution.

An enthusiastic meeting of Plymouth
church was held last Wednesday evening
for the purpose of raising the pastor’s sala-
ry. It was voted without a dissenting voice,
to pay Mr. Beecher the enormous sum of
weekly newspaper. It contains two ‘large
felt cloth factories, a‘fancy cassimere facto-
ry, two straw hat factories, a number of
large fur felt hat factories, a shirt factory,
iron works, a lock factory, a paper box fac-
tory, a manufactory of wrapping paper, a
pottery, boot and shoe factories. &C. The
borough has an efficient fire department,and
fine water works, which also supply Win-
nipauk, a manufacturing village, which to-
gether with the borough and city is supplied
with gas. The borough contains two na-
tional banks, two savings banks, and a fire
insurance company; the city, one national
bank, one savings bank and a fire insurance
company. There are 16 churches, of which
6 are in the borough, 4 in the city, and 6 in
other parts of the town.—Norwalk was set-
tled in 1640. It was burned by the British
under Gov. Tryon, in July, 1779. It was the
scene of a terrible railroad accident in 1853,
when an express train plunged into an open
draw, and 50 lives were lost. The borough
was incorporated in 1836.

An alarm of tire was sounded on Thurs-
day, a. m. The fire was found to be in an

There is a variety of opinions expressed
in regard to the supply of water from Wil-
ton. Many who have yisited it on and
since the Fourth, are of the opinion the sup-
ply is small, while others aver there . is
more than was expected. We shall all
know probably by December next.
A gas main has been laid and connection
made with the new city hall and council
room. Some are so ungenerous as to say
that it will not be needed there, as light and
fact all the grains and roots produce won-
derfully. Fruits are miraculous both in
yield and quality. It is fashionable to say
of California fruits that while the yield is
large they are deficient in flavor. This is
not true. A pear grown in California and
eaten in New York will not have the flavor
a pear should have, but it must be remem-
bered that it has been bounced in railroad
trains seven days, and that it was picked
green. That same pear which is so insipid
in the New York market, is as spicy and
high flavored in San Francisco as one could
wish it. The oranges,strawberries, peaches,
plums, apricots, and all other fruits are just
as good in qualily'as they are in quantity
And remember another point. The Call-
fornian has these things the year round.
There is no season of the year' that new
potatoes, beans, green peas, asparagus and
allec‘tibles'of‘thatclass are not in market,
and strawberries even are plentiful ten
