The fly when it alighls rubs its hind legs
together; then each hind leg is passed over
:1 Wing; then the same operation is perform-
cd with the fore logs, and then if you cl;-
sci‘ve closely, you will see Mr. Fly pass his
trunk or proboscis over his legs and about
his body as far as he can reach The trunk
terminates in two large lobes, which spread
out when the insect begins a meal, and is
capable of being drawn hock i'upidlv, but
though thus constituted, it is not fitted for
licking, but simply for grasping and draw-
ing up food. What the fly does by flying
around and then alighliug and going
through the manccuvcrs described has III
length been successfully investigated and
decided by an English chemist named
Emerson, who carried out his wor k by the
aid of a powerful microscope. He relates
that when he first conceived the idea ofmak-
mg the investigation he captured a. fine
specuncn and glued its wings down to a
microscope slide. Un placing the slide
under the instrument he found to his disgmt
tliatthc fly appeared to be covered {villi
vermin. He tried several othcis, whith
were likewise covered Willi lice, and this
curious coincidence led him to a still further

At first he thought. this vermin tlic fly’s
progeny, but further investigation disproved
this. MrsEmerson took a piece ’of white
paper, on which the two files had lighted
and were licking themselves, and pulling
it under the instrdment’fbund someof the
little creatures had fallen off-J—crnmbs from
the table so to speak. He then took the
paper, went; into the» kitchen. and waving
it around his head, taking care that no fly
touched it during the operation, went back
to the microscope and there found animal-
_ctiles the some ‘as those found' on the flies.
Here he had something definite. They

The really indigent classes go very little
to this huge pawn-shop, a fact which was
roved during the late war. When the
English,moved by the sufi'erings of the
people during the blockade, sent over
money to assist them, a sum of eight hun-
dred pounds was especial] 'devoted to re-

Aaupposed to have pledged them during such
a'time of misery. The managers of the
Hontéde-fpiete made this knownas wide as

above a million articles, and how far would
that subscription go when the sum total

asked to release two thousand tools, and

doubt it would have made its appearance,
but most of the clients .were quite able to
redeem their goods when brighter days

Sometimes those who pledge arc in high

one day some sets of new jewels to the

of persons of high rank interfered in the
affair, hoping to hush it up; but the lady

pay it for her. Justice had to be called in,
when the affair was arrested as if by en-
chsutment. The perfect of police had
spoken to the emperor, who gave a check to
pay for the articles and return them to the
real owners. The most curious part of the
affair was that the emperor, deceiverniy the
name, thought he was saving from disgrace
the wife of a man, who was in strong oppo-
sition to‘his government.

- The Arcadian, speaking of the recent
suicide of Arthur Dyer and the sad death of
Henry Clapp, as a warning to those who
seek admission into what they fancy are
theenchanted realms of journalism, says:
T The prizes in journalism are few and for
between. The life is, at its best, a peculiar-
ly exhausting and wearing one, and it is
only men of extremely tough bodily and
mental materiaiwho do not give way under
the strain before they reach old age. Re-
munerative positions on the Press, even of
‘New'York, are few, and too often they are
notsecured'hy merit, but rather by money,
influence, and friendship. The precarious
living picked up b occasional contributors
and reporters bare y sufilces for immediate
wants, and such positions expose one to
the caprices of editors who are sometimes
ignorant and not . seldom unmannerly.
Even those who secure editorial ap oint-
mentado not get paid for their talent in the
”same rat as they would if they had devor-
'e'd’them' 'othcr pursuits, and the necessi-
ties of their associations generally compel
them to live quite up to their incomes.
Young man, unless you possess exceptional
talent and education, a strong physique,
imperturbability of temper under injustice
and hard usage,and invincible determina-
tion to succeed, a temperament proof
against constant temptations to excess and
dissipation, and unwearin'g industry, you
can never hope to rise above the mere rank
and file ofjournalists. Possessing all these,
you may, after years of arduous work. win
distinction, , and moderate compensation,
'but even then, you will not unfrequently be
tempted to ask yourself whether “the game
was worth the candle t"
