the city, regretful of the past and hopeful

adoption of the following preamble and
resolution :
WHEREAS, This association has heard it state-
ment by a special committee of our state confer
ence. setting forth their plan and efforts to secure
in Hartford a suitable building for the use and ben-
efit of the Congregational churches of this stateln
promoting their efficiency and fellowship in Chris-
tian work— . .
Resolved, That we approve of this proycct. as
now set before us, and believing that, it success.
fully carried out. it will remedy it great. defect in
our system of effort increase our ability to _do
Christian work. and quicken and encourage imn
istcrs and churches in their labors: and we there-
fore commend it to the favorable regard of the
churches, and especially to the liberal encourage—
ment of such Christian men among us as 'hltve
means to use in devising liberal things for Zion.
The project originated in the slate con-
ference ot'churcbes, and is for the establish-
ment in Hartford of a Congregational house,
which shall furnish ample ofiicc accommo-
dations for Home Missionary and other
character in Ameriéan politics, conducting
the United States Telegraph, at Washington,
which was the organ of General Jackson in
1820-28, and succeeded in its purpose of
breaking down the administratio of John
Quincy Adams. But he afterw rds quar-
relcd with Jackson, and became the blind
follower of Calhoun, and never recovered
his influence.

Hat Factory, came near losing his life on
Saturday evening, at our Danbury depot.

the evening train to Winnipauk, just ahead
of the locomotive, when his hat blew 08
had he at once sprang for it and stooping to
grab it the engine struck him on the‘ side of
his head and of course knocked him sense
less. He was taken up into the depot,
and when he came to consciousness was
carried home in a carriage. Today he is
better and hopes are entertained by Dre.

will recover. The contusion was found to
be on the toughest'portion of the skull.
Had it been an inch lower his death would
have been instantaneous.

At the annual school meeting of the Cen-
ter District, on Friday evening last, Messrs.
James G. Gregory, M. D., George M.
Holmes and Charles H. Street, were elected
District Committee for the ensuing year.
There was the largest attendance present
known in years. A resolution was offered
not allowing the.committee to hire any
teacher at a salary to exceed one thousand
dollars a year.’ It'was voted down.

Prof. Gibson, is to give us a rich Musical
treat on Friday evening next at the Opera
House. He promises a most carefully
selected programme and Lynes, promises as
plenty of fresh air, so that a most delightful
evening may be surely anticipated. ‘
Mr. Gibson has this (Monday) morning
received word from Mr. Eugene Clarke that
he will be unavoidably prevented from
singing at the concert and has provided Mr.
Harrison Millard to sing in his place.
The Independent B. B. C. of this place,
and tho Rip Raps of Westport, had a game
of ball together last Wednesday, when our
boys rapped the Westporters to the tune of
24 to 13; so the Silver Bali still remains
with the Independents. Our boys have not
played much this season, but they are not
to be rip-rap'd easily.
Festivals.
The lateness of the season this year has
kept back the various society festivals, .but
now that strawberries have commenced to
ripen in this vicinity the festivals are bud-
ding out quite fast.
Last week Monday evening_Hope Hose
Company led ofi‘ with their usual pleasant
and cut away to the decided improvement
of his grounds.
The Marvin Brothers, down town, expect
to complete their granite wall and gate
posts, surrounding their homestead, some-
time during the year.
It is rumored that the Presidency of the
Bank of Norwalk made vacant by the death
of Eben Hill, will be filled by either Dr.
Samuel Lynes or E. P. Weed, Esq.
Justice E. W. Stewart, stepped into a.
post hole, left uncovered at the east end of
the South Norwalk Bridge on Saturday and
came near breaking his leg. Such pitfalls
are reprehensibly common.
Chas. M’Coy,Esq., of Baltimore, was in
town last week. It was Mr. M‘Coy’s little
son who so bravely rode the keel of the up-
set skifl‘ at the time the steamboat hit the
Selleck school club boat and the three lads
were drowned. .

The Borough Authorities on petition of
those interested have passed a by-law rc-
quiring street-vendors of Fruits, Vegetables,
Merchandize. etc, to take out a peddlers’
license. This is as it ought to be, our mer-
chants ought lo have some little protection
against this class of competitors,'who swarm
our streets without any local place or habi-
tation.
The usual Fourth of July Notices about
time of using Fire-works field, in the Bor-
ough limits will also be found in our adver-
ismg columns.
Smith Jr. Earle emptied their cellar last
week of several tons ot waste paper, and
paste-board boxes, all being carted to the
Silver Stream paper mill to be ground over
again into new material. How much wiser
and better than to sweep refuse papers into
the street to frighten horses and defile the
clerks are wont to do.

church, which was enjoyed by a very full

The Common Council at an"adjourned
meeting on Wednesday, the 9th inst., voted
$150 to the Norwalk Fire Department, as a
token of appreciation for services rendered
the city. '
As was predicted, the contest for mayor
simmered down to the present mayor and
eat-mayor, as the candidates. On Tuesday
night, one .of‘ those gatherings which are
growing proverbial, was held at Military
Hall, for the purpose of nominating candi-
dates for Mayor, City Clerk, Treasurer, Col-
lector, Auditor, Marshall and Water Com-
missioners. The contest for that of Mayor
was exciting, the ballots showing that the
people were about-equally divided, as the
count differed but one or two. Upon the

The Big Bonanza Circus performed to a
fair house notwithstanding the rain, on
Thursday afternoon and evening. Their
street parade was far short of what was
advertised, but the circus performance was

Chinese Private Life.
Here are some hints that may be useful
to some of our cooks; They have a large
screen before the door way, which gives
firivacy sufficient for their need. The win-
