A portion of the bank forming the East
side of the Canal at the Norwalk Mills gave
way Friday morning last causing a tempo-
rary stoppage ofthe works; it is supposed
~ to be caused by muskrats.
Mr. Fred Fiedler whose sight was injured
by a piece of coal, is at the New York Eye
heard to ask,“ Why in the name of com-
mon sense did the architect make so pain-
ful acrook in that wall ?" To some the
answer, “ It was done as a beautifier of the
work,” .is given; while others, receiving
no answer, have departed impressed with,
the fact that there are mysteries in science
which only study and application can
fathom. .
The smelt catch has been great during
the week. In addition to supplying those
here most in need of that favorite fish, not
less than 500 pounds have been sent to
the New Haven Markets.

Rev. L. S. Stevens has gone to Lockport,
New York, where he was once rector of a
church, for a sojourn of live weeks. Dur-
sufi‘ering from it, who are ignorant of the
fact, and attribute their suffering to some
other cause, and it not .unfreqnenily hap-
pens that the (‘ll‘ect is mistaken for the cause
and vice versa. To these a short description
lof the disease will be interesting.

to Daniel Kane, was destroyed by fire last

Friday last the ice blockade was raised
and three barges of coal came to the relief
ofthe citizens of‘ Stamford who were unfor-
tunately out of fuel. Every earman in town‘
was busily employed delivering coal during
Saturday and Monday, and people breathed
fre'er than than they did during the coal
famine. .
Last Sunday evening, after a most elo-
quent and vivid picture of Joshua as a
moral hero, and a brave leader worthy of
imitation, painted by Rev. Mr. Willis in a
truly truly artistic manner, and while the
church was engaged im collecting a sub-
scription for the purpose of paying for the

In both parishes the churches’ year be-

ing to them say they are passing along
prosperously. ,

wamps has been heard.
People who have neglected till now to
prune their grape vines, may now do so
with impunity, if they. will o‘y salve the

Thomas W. Werner, Esq., of the U. S.
Coast Survey, and Thomas W. Werner, Jr.,
.are in Washington,D. 0., making a short
visit. ' .
This week the yacht Ibis, Captain Charles
H Fairchild, belonging to Brown Bros,
‘Bankers Philadelphia, will be returned to
New Brnnswick,where she will be converted
into a steam yacht. She will be lengthened
forty feet, will receive a screw propeller
costing $15,000, and when finished her coal
capacity will be sufficient for a cruise of
fifteen days. The -total cost of alteration
cannot be less than $50,000.

Effects of Catarrh on the
Threat.
In consequence of the close proximity Of
the throat to'the nasal pasages, and the mu-
cous membrane lining it, being a continua-
tion of that lining the nasal passages, any
disease of the nasal passage in time is sure
to extend to it.
In the majority of cases of' Catarrh, after
a certain stage, the mucous falls into the
throat, which from its irritating nature, tO‘
gether with the fact that the inflamation of
the mucous membrane of the name has grad-
ually extended itself to that of the throat,
soon developes a bronchial difficulty, which
is the reason why so maily diseases of throat
'are caused from Catarrb, and why so many
cases of neglected Catarrli result in a bronch-
ical difficulty. ' .
The usual effects of Catarrh on the throat
are: a sensation of heat,smarting, dryness,
tickling, more particularly after retiring to
bed, a constant disposition to swallow or
hawk and raise—in some instances there be-
ing a feeling as though something was in
the throat which the patient wished to dis-
lodge, aud an irritable hacking cough.
One or more of these symptoms are sure
,to be present, which exposure to cold or
change in the atmosphere will aggravate.
It frequently happens that the mucos will
collect and burden in the throat, giving
great trouble to raise it. This is more fre-
quently apt to be the case in the morning.
But yet with'many it will continually occur
