These are painful accusations, but every
Democrat as 'well as. Republican know
them to be true. Why all this? Is it not
clear that the Democratic party is still the
friend and ally of slavery. Does it not
clearly'show that it hopes for some reaction.
That it seeksto gain ascendancy bypander—
ing to the base and disloyul elements at the
South. Surely by their fruits ye shall know
them. For political pow er the Demorcatic
party would apparently tear down ante
barriers built up by the four years of heroic
sacrifice and blood. Can you vote for a
party with such a record and purpose?
Will They Benign?
The democratic press of the State, and
particularly the Hartford Times, refused to be
comforted, at the time Judge Minor was
running for Congress because he didn’t re-
sign his place upon t c Bench before enter-
ing upon a contest for a partizau ofiice. We
assured the Time: of Judge Minor’s inten-
tion of resigning whether elected or not,
but this would not assuage its grief. The
Times insisted that it was ti scandalous inde-
cency for a judicial officer to be in a serum-
ble for political ofilcc, while holding his
place on the Bench. Of course we do not
imputc to either J udgc Phelps or Foster any
. less delicate sense of propriety than Judge
Minor entertained, and no doubt they both
intend to follow the very proper example

in the carriage shop and in less than half an
hour the buildings were in ashes. The con-
tents were all destroyed it being impossible
to save anything. Insured for about $1,000
Mr. Franklin who occupied a portion as a
carriage shop had an insurance of about
3500. The fire wa’the work of an incendi-
ary, and from information already obtained
it is hoped the miscreant will be arrested.
The Selectmen made twenty-five new
voters at South Norwalk last Tuesday, and
forty~seven lip-town on Saturday last. The
number made in each district, so far, is as
follows: First District, 55; Second Dis-
trict, 41; Third District, 4; Total 100-
