mere, and crape, some ready-made clothing,
and the money in the draws, amounting in
all to about $400, they went to the school
house in West Darien, which they entered,
and, stripping the papers off the goods and
their old clothes off themselves, put the
goods in a bag, and themselves into the
stolen garments. Proceeding to Stamford
they took an early train for New York

hauled near the Danbury Railroad track
and proved to be quite a well-known resi-
dent of the neighborhood—a big dog. He
had broken into a box which Mr. Jennings
had ﬁxed up in his back yard for the pur-
pose of smoking the hams, and had taken
them one by one and carried them over the

a ton to haul it up from Bridgeport. When
the railroad was ﬁnished the yearly
consumption of coal in the town alone, was
200 tons. Now many thousand tons are re-

The Board of Belief completed the tax
list last Saturday. The amount of abate-
ments is less than it was last year. Yet the
grand assessment is only $5,443,835 against
$5,555,087 for the your previous, while the
rate, one per cent, is the same. .

Danbury had a golden wedding on Tues-
day evening week. The couple thus honor-
ed are Mr. and Mrs. Adam Hawthorne. The
affair took place at the residence of their
son-in-law, Mr. Theodore Morris, Elm St.
and was largely attended. The presents
were numerous. Mrs. Hawthorne has reach-

,ed the three-score and ten mark, aner.
Hawthorne has gone seven years beyond.

Irs. Ezekiel Eaton, Locust avenue, died
suddenly Sunday morning. She had suffer-
ed some time from lung fever, but of late
had begun to, improve, was feeling much
better only an hour before her death.

Mrs. Antony Pnttison, living on Balm-
forth avenue, was taken with a ﬁt on Thurs-
da afternoon, and died in a few moments.

Mr. Harvey Hibbard, father of Mrs. O. A.
Rogers, died suddenly at 1 o’clock Friday

’ morning, at his residence on White street,
Mr. Hilibard Was a sufferer from neuralgia
of the heart. For six weeks he had been
conﬁned to the house. He died sitting in a
chair. At midnight his wife laid down in
the room, leaving him comfortable. An
hour later he made a movement, and she
got up at once to attend to him. but he lived
only two or three minutes. The deceased
was at one time the station agent in Daubury
of the Brookﬁeld railroad,

A singular and somewhat unfortunate ac-
cident happened in one of our churches.
The pastor was conducting the service, and
had risen to read the llymn,when one of the
deacons came in. He passed back of the
reader, and seeing the chair which his pas~
tor had just vacated, draw it to one side, and
calmly appropriated it to his own use, with-
out noticing that it' belonged to another.

When the preacher had concluded the read-

ing, he sank back to resume his seat, but

perceiving only an ordinary amount of at-
mosphere to receive him, he made a heron-

sleigh on Saturday and injured about the

Mr. Sylvester Sturges on Thursday met
with a serious accident, while in the act of
striking his axe into a log of wood it
glanced off and the edge of the axe struck
his left foot splitting the small toe.

Wednesday evening as the Rev. Mr. Wil-
lis,ofthe M. E. church was entering his
residence by the side door, he slipped on

fore arm near the wrist. The injury will
