“ The most extraordinary excitement pre-
vailed in .Stamford to-day. The citizens
have beeanoused; fromtheir - usual 'qu'iet
by the Sheriff of "Fairfield County calling
. out the militia to capture a gang of outlaws
named Mackcy, who had been tracked from
Long Ridge, where it is one ed they burg-
lnrized the store of Geo. . Palmer, and
helped themselves to their winter.prov_is--
ion .of groceries, tea, flour, et‘c. Early on
the morning of Friday, Mr. Palmer, found
his store had been broken into and robbed
of several: barrels of flour, groceries, teas,
basket pf champagne, etc. Fortunately a
light snow had fallen during the night, and
he at once hitched up‘his horse and follow-
ed the tracks until it brought him to the
house of the Mackey family. There, before
the door he saw an old horse and wagon
with a load of his goods. He immediately
sought Deputy Sheriff Newman and Capt.
Lever who madea descent on the premises,
captured'tbe goods and one of the men im-
plicated. The rest of the men bavin taken
to the woods. During Friday night- .eputy
Sheriffs Newman and Nichols ‘ with a score
or more of assistants, took possession of the
house with the expectation of capturing the
entire gang, but about midni 'ht, as Sheriff
Newman was peering throng ”the window
a rifle ball whizzed past his head. Another,
and still another! As the noise of footsteps
approached the house, all was quiet and -
darkness. Every one inside expected the re-
fractory outlaws would . now enter their
home, but the “ lady ofthehonse’? frustrated
their expectation by just‘then lifting the lid
of the stove and a bright light revealed to
the Hockey boys the room full of ofllcers.
At this juncture, Sheriff Newman rushed out
and saw the fellows enter the woods and es-
ca e. .

uniform, armed and equipped as the law di-
rects, were taken to the scene of action, and
a squad under Lieutenant Studwell and the
balance under Captain Lever surrounded
the Black Swamp and are now engaged in

A long line of carriages, citizens on foot
and on horseback, proceeded to the scene
and took possession of the premises,~literol-
1y filling the main portion of the house. The
cellar contained several barrels of cider‘and
a quantity of apples,‘ some potatoes and
cool. In one corner was a barrel of meat
salted down, in the attic were several guns,
ssbres, a. lot of new clothing and other prop-

19th of November Mr. J. H. Farrinvton had

Mr. Henry B. Drew is going to rebuild
his present residence, on Stratford avenue,
and from the plans he will have, when com-
pleted, one of the finest residences in West
Stratford.
The Presbyterian church and chapel, on
Myrtle avenue, known as..l)r., _Hew1tt’s
church, was destroyed by fire ‘early Wed-
nesday evening last. The origin of the fire
is unknown, but supposed to have caught
from a candle used by some workmen who
were engaged in making repairs upon the.
organ. The fire was discovered about-seven
o’clock, and the steam fire engines were
promptly on hand, bllt owing to an inade-

Colonel S. II. Perkins. of the old Four-
teenth C. V., died on Wednesda last at the
State hospital for the insane at ilddletoan
He was a brave intrepid oflicer.. Colonel
Perkins enlisted at the breaking out of the
War in 1861, forming a company on the first
call of Governor Buckingham for three
months volunteers, but the quota being filled
the company enlisted for three years in the
Fourth regiment, afterwards changed to the
First Connecticut Heavy Artillery. He was
in the battle of Antietam and of redericks-
burg, Dec. 13th, 1862, when he was badly
wounded by a rifle ball in the neck and
honorably discharged on account of wounds,
April 20th, 1863. lie never fully recovered
from his wound, and it gradually growing
worse finally resulted in insanity, and a few
months since he was taken to the State hos-
pital at Middletown, where he died.

hearts, during all his christian and ministe-
rial lifc and especially during the years that
he has been President of this Society since
