The first snow of the season ell Sunday
morning as people were preparing rot-church.
It was partlyiin shape of bail, and was sug-
gestive of the weather we are probably to
have. On three morning's 0f the week ice
formed and theground was frozen.
There was a meeting of the legal voters
of the town, Saturday, to discuss oysters
and oyster beds. It was: well attended and
the subject. diacusscd at length. For years
it has been apparrent that something‘must
be done'to protect oysters and secure
11 supply to those entitled to them.
The Saugatuct river beds breed naturally,
and it is but a few years sincc,th1t one
might with a small outlay of tune and labor
procure a quantity of oysters, of very good
size and quality, without going beyond the
'1iver's month. All the way- from Wright’s
Island to 'the canal' 1n the channel and upon
the rocks on the river's bank,’ could be ob-
tained the bivalves which have made’. our .
river famous. Later, the science of 0y stcr
propagation was studied, and oystermcn
from abroad, learning of our river’ :1 peculiar
fruitfulness, came to rake and scrape from
it. The result was a clean river’s bed, profit
accruing ’to those not entitled to it, and loss
to those rightfully having claims. In short,
the yearly clearing out became so systemat-
'e. that it was _eyidcntlthc river must soon ~-

adopted and fines imposed. Some oyster
vandals were caught and made to pay, but
in a little time after the scare had subsided

lay reader, at Christ Church, were necessary
on Sunday. Rev. Mr. Williams’ health,
.however, is improving.
Many of the public highways have recent-
.ly been repaired. The walks in front of the
.‘Cougregatioual Church have also been ‘at-
headed to.
One week from Thursday is Thanksgiv.
Sing. It will be observed, as of old, with
view to renewing old associations and hav-
nng a good time. Old homesteads will glow
with the countenances of those made happy
in them inthe past, and the new comers
who have, perchance, few fond recollections
'of the event, may be able to learn lessons
which will serve to teach them it is profit-

On Thursday evening of last week in
their lecture room,.~ the Congregational
church gave a rece tion to their retiring
minister, Rev. ll. B hurston; who preach-
ed his farewell sermon the Sunday proceed-
ing, and parted with him on friendly terms.
The Rev. gentleman has taken. up his abode
in New Haven for the present. Mr. Thurs-
:ton made many friends 1n Stamford during
lhis sojourn here of several years, and was a
faithful and earnest preacher, and endeared
himself to many in his gongre ation.
The barn of John St. John, 311., was en-
tered on Wednesday night, and a good set
of harnese stolen. This is the third set
which has been taken from him within a
few months.

A movement is again on foot for the pur-
chase of the Le Grand Lockwood mansion.

We wish the town of Norwalk had the sa-
gacity and enterprise to become its purchas-
er. The grounds could be and should be
thrown into a public park, while the man-

to the town. The money could now be _
ieasely raised on six per cent, twenty-five
‘year bonds, and those who came after
us and have to pay the indebtedness would
