The field and stafi‘ of the 4th Regiment are
. a very reserved and modest set of men.
Thursday was the great day of the week._
His excellency, the Governor, and other
“ dignitaries of state," reviewed the troops,
and everything‘exhibited its prettiest side
foremost. As early as six o’clocknin'the
morning, loads .of country people began to,
flock‘ln, and every train deposited crowds-
ofpcoplecome towitness the ceremonies.
By noon the little town was fairly alive
with visitors, and matters and things around
the hotels and eating tents, if nowhere else.
were decidedly interesting. At two o’clock,
p. m., the Governor arrived,and, acccom-
panied by his staff. immediately set Out for
the Camp Ground. The Governor rode in
an open barrouche, as he never rides on
horseback. Chief Justice Waite and Gen:
erals Charnley and Green occupied the Gov~
crnor’s carriage, which was followed by
other carriages containing Lieutenant-Gov
Sill, Secretary of State Sanger, State Treas-
urer Raymond, Mayor Waller of New “Lon-
don; also Hon. Benjamin Stark and Col.‘
Loomis of that city, “Mayor Cleveland, of
Niantic, _Mayor Lewis, General Merwin,
and Hon. N. D. Sperry of New Haven.
There were also present General William
B. Franklin, late of the regular army, Cap-
.tain Keefe and Captain )Djay of..the- Fifth
regular-artillery, stationed at Fort Trum-
bull,besides a large gathering of military
men belonging to the First and Third regi-
ments, GIN. G. . . _
A salute of eighteen minute guns an-
nounced their arrival, the band played
“Hail to the Chief,” the people cheered,
and the “ball had opened.”"Evcrything
passed 011‘ in good style and much to the
credit of all concerned. 'Aflerthe review
the Governor and staff were entertained at
the quarters of Gen. Craufiird, and after-
ward at mounts-tors -of‘Col.‘ Hoyt.~ At the
latter place much speech making was in-
dulged in by the distinguished gentlemen
present, and the boys highly complimented
for their fine soldierly bearing and general
