Mr. Patrick Tillaley, for nineteen years in
the employ of Morris Ketcliuni, Esq. died
suddenly at “ Hockanum" on‘Thursday last
in his 66th year.

‘T‘r-edei'ick Bradley, son of Jesse Bradley
Esq. of Saugatuck, has an apple two years
old, and likely to keep ten times that period.
In the Summer of 1872 be fastened a large
mouthed bottle over a growing apple, secur-
ing the same to its place among the twigs
by cords. As the apple developed it was
forcezl within the bottle, in time filling its
entire space. In the autumn it was taken
in that condition from the tree, was tightly
corked, and has remained in tact ever since.

Speaking of apples, the writer has one,

a “Greening,” which is fourteen years old,
originally, the surface of the apple was filled
with cloves, so closely forced through the
rind as to entirely cover it. Some of the
cloves have. now droped out but the apple
in its peppery-dried 'condition remains and
very likely, unless it comes in contact with
water may retain its identity for a generation
In antiquated fruit Mr. Lewis Bradley is
ahead of all. He has an orange 37 years
old, and, so far as form and color is con-
erned, is in a perfect state of preservation.
Its history is interesting. The orange was
given to Miss Marietta A. Bradley, sister of,
Mr. Bradley, in 1837 by a Mr. Nelson B.
Ells, during a pagsage from New York to
Norwalk on the steamer Fairfleld, Capt.
Peck. Previous to her dcccase, many years
after, Miss Bradly gave the orange to her
sister Lucy, residing in Newburgh, from
which family, four years ago it; was~sent by
express to Westport. It bears the inscrip-
tion, “The orange presented by Mr. Ells to
M. A. Bradley of Weston, Fair-field county
Conn., 1837. -

Saturday April 25th 1874 will be memor
able in history as having furnished a snow
storm from the North East, by way of keep-
ing up the variety in unexpected weather
development

Property holders on the line of the depot
road who are now throwing back fences and
buildings to the commissioners line, and
who in one instance have had to pay $800,
benefits? to get 'five dollars damages, and
in numerous other instances have submitted
to most ridiculous decisions,are deliberating
the subject of obtaining photographs of the
said Commissioners to hang in their parlors.
They claim that such intellect; sense;
judgment ; business tact; and complete dis-
interestedness; as was displayed by the
Commissioners, would, if artistically deline-
ated on canvass, incite youthfulmembers of
their families to imitate noble examples no
bly set. '

After the dispa :' : ging remarks by doubters
as to“Vigilants" ,) iwer, the result of a trial
on Thursday last must serve as a well mer-
ited rebuke. The engine, with less than. a

compliment of men at the brakes, threw
water a distance of 130 feet. Good for Vig-
-ilant. ‘

Rev. John K. Williams exchanged pulpits
Sunday, with Rev. Mr. Marvin, of Marble-
dale, formerly of Weston. .

Rev. Dr. Short, at one time connected
with Memorial Chin-5h, took part in a Ser-
vice there Sunday.

George S. Adams was driven from his
potato planting Saturday by the Snow
storm.

It is said onion seed at $10. per pound is

' so high that effort Will be needed to bring factory villages during the fall term, While continuance of the same,

During the next two weeks the song,
“Woodman spare that tree,” which residents
on the depot road have been practicing, will
be sung with renewed earnestness; but the

Mr. Alonzo Acker while playing with his
horse recently, had his under lip bitten
entirely off by the animal. The accident
occurred near the corner of Wall and Water
streets, and the young man was trying to
teach his horse to kiss him, after the
manner of circus performers. -

Companies B, E, K, 4th Regiment, held a
battalion drill at Stamford, last Friday.

Murray‘s Circus, exhibits to-day.

Two men were convicted of an attempt at
highan robbery and sent to jail last week.

St. George’s Society celebrated Shakes-
peire’s birthday by a banquet, on Thursday
evening last.

Rev. Mr. De Millc, of Long Hill. has ac~
cepted a call to Cherry Valley, N Y.

Trade is represented to be reviving and
freighting business is brisk.

Patrick H. Masterson, of Bridgeport re-
cently attempted to shoot his wife, from
whom he had parted, in New Haven. He
was prevented by another woman stepping
between them and was afterwards arrested.

The Alert is the name of the propeller
put on the Stamford route by the new
Freight Company.

Three boys were lucked up on Sunday
week for drunkenness.

The man who recently had his legs cut
off by the cars, was a sailor, and is now at
the Naval Hospital. It is thought that he
will recover.

The temperance movement is progressing.
On Wednesday afternoon the residence of
Mr. W. D. Scofieltl was entered by a sneak
thief, .who succeeded in carrying ofi‘ a gold
watch valued at $175.

The Congregational church society voted
not to accept the resignation of their. pastor,
Rev. Mr. Thurston. "
The semi-annual session of the Presby-
tery of Westchester was held last week and
was well attended—Advocate.

 

Mr. William W. Eaton, of Hartford, and
the Hon. William H. Barniim,.the present
member of the House of Representatives
from the Fourth District of Connecticut,
are brought into prominence just now as
probable candidates to succeed Senator"
Buckingham. The New York Tribune is
authorit for the assertion that the first nam-
ed gent eman will receive the support of
General Hawley,‘bnt this must bea mistake.
General Hawley still claims to be _a Repub

'lican, although the newspaper which is
known as his home organ sometimes assails
that party. The Tribune has blundered, no
doubt, but it is an excusable blunder under
the circumstances.— Washington Republican.

Sad Death ofn Bride.
BROOKLYN, April 23.—L-ist nights Wed-
ding occurred at East Meadow, L. I., and
the bride, Belle Halmer Wheeler, 11 young
and beautiful girl, was placed in a carriage
to be driven home. Her husband was
preparing to enter the carriage, when some
one fired a gun,as a parting salute. The
horse gave a bound forward and dashed
down the street. In rounding a curve the
carriage was overturned, the bride became
entangled in the broken harness, and the
horse, after dragging her half a mile, over a
rough road,finally fell into a ditch. The
ady was dead when picked up by her terri-
fled relatives, her head being nearly torn
from the body and every limb broken.

The proprietor of the Mansion Housé,
Litchfield, discharged a colored waiter re-’
cently for drunkenness. The colored man's
wrath was-thereby aroused so that he struck
his employer and a melee ensued, in which
a constable, sheriff and three negroes were
involved. _ ,

School Attendance in Connoctic III.
The Connecticut School Journal says :—
Mr. Potter, agent of the State Board of
Education states that in nearly every fac-
tory village, and in most of the cities, the
former attendance at school is much better
than in former years. In one of the largest

the factories were in full operation, the
number of children registered in the school
was sixty-seven per cent. more than during
the fall term of the previous year, and that
without any increase in the number of
