WESTPORT. ,
Mr. J. E. Wheeler, of Saugatuck, has
moved the fence' in front of his house to: the_
line adopted by the County Commissioneas.
He has also purchased the land on which
stands Hubbell 1h Wakeman’ s store, and
that enterprising firm will move their struct-
ure across the street, which will make what
is now the rear of their store, its front.
The change will give the firm first-class
dock facilities and enhance their business.
Mr. Wheeler has also purchased the late res-
idence and grounds of Mr. O. W. Hotchkiss,
also the road leading thereto, and. will shut
it up. To establish the new roanine in
front of E. S. Wheeler’s will necessitate the .
sacrifice of two or three fine forest trees.
All these improvements will change the
look (if things in Sangatuck.
Capt. Hanley, the loss of whose boat was
mentioned last week, reports that that is the
third time some enemy has cut loose his
hawaers. When he left the boat it was so fast-
seed that nothing short of human hands could
set her‘free. No intervening rocks could pcs-
sibly have chafed the lines in two.
All Fool’s Day found victims of misplaced
confidence. The. sawdust packages, tied to
resemble sugar, the portmonie fattened
with broWn paper instead 'of greenbacks,
and letters with ficticious n'ames giving
times and places where interviews might be
held, all tended to make the day’ s character
in keeping with itself. The question as to
, who is best capable of takin a joke with-
out getting mad when the po tof the joke
is disclosed, was moerhan once demons-
trated.
The Passion Week Services were well at-
tended, and Good Friday was as solemn as
Sunday. It happened to be a National,
State and Church Fast day. The union of
the Congregationalvand Methodist Societies
.'or a service in the latter’s church, drew
in any worshippers, whose earnestness and
dot 'otion will have its due efi‘ect.

Wheeliei‘, the Jeweler, will give by illustra-
tion a satisfactory answer to the question
heretofore considered Iparadoxical, enig-
matical and abstruse, vis.: “ which part of

lower.” He has the problem so mapped
out as to convince the most incredulous that
the upper part maves fastest. While to the
' eye of average mortals and problematists
there is no difierence in the speed of the re-
speotive parts of the wheels, Mr. Wheeler
calls in' science, and, as with a club, knocks
them dumfounded by demonstrating before
their wondering eyes how the thing is pos-

On Thursday evening of last week, Rev.
C. S. Walker, lately of West Virginia gave
a lecture before the Mechanics' Library As-
sociation. His subject was: “ From the
Kanawha to the Big Sandy, or Life and
Scenes in West Virginia.” The sublime
and varied scenery was described in terse
and graphic language, the climate, people,
resources and future of that comparatively
unknown but very interesting region were
set forth with great clsarnoas and force.
many amusing anecdotes connected with the
life of the poor whites, together with singu-
dlence and gave a very vivid picture of South
importance of this vast forile section of our
country, its mineral wealth and sure growth
in time to come in manufactories,especiaily
of iron, were presented in a very practical
manner, showing a thorough understanding
of the whole subject. 'The lecture, though
exceedingly instructive and packed with' in-
formation, was not dry, for at every point

The music rendered by the choirs Easter
morning was joyous and contrasted agreea-

extensive than those of any previous year.
The ladies are grateful to Mr. Morris Ketch-

butions. The altar looked magnificently,
and everything was arranged in great good
taste. Rev. John R. Williams conducted
the aerviccs.
The altar of the Memorial church, also its
baptismal basin were animate with real
blossoms of every known hue, and the fra-
granccthey shed in the sacred edifice was ,
as incense to the assembled worshippers.
Mrs. M. 1‘. Winslow, Mr. Chas. C. Alden
and others did themselves honor in furnish-
ing the church so handsomely. The choirs
musical selections were mostly new, but all
appropriate and well performed. Rev. L. 8'
Stevens, Rector, ofiiciated, preaching to the
people in the morning and instructingdhe
children _in the afternoon. The annual
meetings of the respective parishes, took
place yeiterday,—-Monday.
Capt. Bulkley has decided to have the
damaged schooner James K. Polk repaired
at an expense of not less than $2, 000.
Mr. Joseph Spicer, the village night watch-
man! has, during the blustering nights of the
last two weeks, earned in full the money
which the merchants paid him.
