mas Eve, are a decided novelty to a north-

Church was held on Christmas night. We
were unable to be‘p’resent, but hear that the
church was very handsomely decorated for
the occasion, that the attendance was large,
and thatthc exercises were pleasing, and
satisfactory in an unusual degree:

One substantial indication of . the im-
provement in the times hereabouts is to be

The Hon. Samuel T. Jones, Clerk of the
United States Circuit and District Courts,
and United States Commissioner for the
Eastern District of the State of New York,
died at his residence, .No. 50 South Portland
ave, Brooklyn, on Wednesday night, after
a very brief illness. aged 39' years. ,He was
born in Wilton, Cdnn., and. came to Brook-
lyn at the age of 18, where he studied law
for several years and was admitted to the

and eight years ago received the Federal ap-
pointments which he held at the time of his
death. He was a prominent member of the

The defendants produced affidavits of
Ralph M. Pomeroy, E. H. Nichols and
William Osborn, to show that the road was
not built under the contract, in opposition
to Mr. Treadw ell’s single afildavit. Judge
Barrett presiding, decided to, let the motion
be renewed on additional aflldavits. In
November, commissions were issued to take
testimony of important, witnesses, but the
defendants appealing, Mr. Treadt‘vell had an
order graptcd .by Judge Daniels to’take
affidavits before a referee, to be used this
week on the renewal of the motiou'for a
receiver. Considerable amount of stock in
this road is owned in and about Norwalk.

was alluded to, and expressions of regret

length of the room, with another for the in-
fant class inside of the altar railing. These
were lavishly supplied with oranges, apples,
cake, sandwiches, candies, etc. The room
was handsomely decorated with evergreens,
wearing a remarkably cheerful appearance.
At one cnd,in evergreen letters, was an
inscription “Merry Christmas,” flanked on
each side with “The Spirit and the Bride
say Come” and? “Whoever "will let him
