DABIEN.
An exhibition of Tableaux Vivants, for
the benefit of the Woman’s Mission Society,
is to be given at Ill} Darieu Seminary on
Friday evening next. We are assured that
thcladics ot' the society have taken great
pains in arranging the tableauir, and judg-
ing from their successes in the past, have no
doubt that the entertainment willprove one

I: his annual report the Secretary of the
Navy says: "‘There are now in the navy
161 vessels, carrying, exclusive of howitzers,
1,269 guns, being a reduction since the last
report of 18 vessels, carrying 826 guns, 29
sailing vessels. There are at present 6
steamers and ironclads carrying 322 guns,
49 ironclads, carrying 121 guns, and 25 tugs,
also, for the navy yard and freight purposes.
Tlierc are at present in commission 46 ves-
sels carrying 407 guns. Many of the ships
are far from being such as are really needed.

tlemen to take charge of church and Sun-
day school festivities. It is understood a
grand time for the little folks is in prospect.
The work of tying evergreens has already
commenced.
The first lecture of the “Star Course,” will
be delivered at National Hall, to-morrow,
Tuesday, evening, subject, “Brains,” by
Hon. Ingersoll Lockwood, late U. S. consul
to the Kingdom of Hanover.
The snow which fell Monday and Tucs-
day of last week, met its deadly enemy, is
warm rain, on Wednesday and Thursday.
Evergreen committees are taking advantage
of the situation. ,
Work on the Grecn§ Farms church is
rapidly and satisfactorily progressing.
The first of a series of sociables to begin
this winter, took place Tuesday evening,
December, 2d, at the house of Mr. Theodore
W‘crner, Mr. W—declares he never enjoyed
himself better in his life.
The crew of Capt. Bulkley’s schooner had
to open the village draw themselves the
other night. They did some tall growling
because of it, and. by way of expressing in-
dignation went off leaving the draw stand-
ing open. '
Mrs. William B. Wright, hearing her son
was lying dangerously ill of brain fever in
the town of Oakley, Mich., started. for that
place last week. No intelligence as yet, has
been received as to the young man’s condi-
.tion.
Sunday was, contidering the season, one
of great loveliness. The presence of sun-
shine, and the alz~ ace of snow and cold
north winds made 2 so.

preached directly at me." We‘visited the
old pastor, and he, alluding to the disaffect-
ed ones, asked, “What do they say?” We
replied, “They say you preach at people,
and last Sabbath morning, Mr, H. says you
preached at him.” “Well,” said the old pas-
tor, “I preached that sermon eerbattm before
he was born ;" and on examining the man‘-
llflt‘l‘i'pl, it was so dated.
Rev. Joel H. Linslcy, D. D., formerly of
Boston and Marietta College-while pastor
of the Second Church, Greenwich, Conn.,
preaching by exchange, in the First Church,
was accused by a family of being brought
there by their pastor to deliver a discourse
which he dared not preach, exposing and
censuring them in. their domestic relations.
It was in vain that the venerable doctor as-
surcd them that he had never heard of them,
nor their family trOubles; and that the ser-
mon complained oflwas preached verbatim as
written for another congregation, for distant,
years before. They refused to bdconvinccd
or to be comforted, but were estranged from"
the church. The father died soon after,
long before the preacher. ' B.

The following report of a presentation to
John Camp, Jr., formerly of this place, we
find in the Jersey City Journal. ~
Presentation to John Camp Jr.
Among the dismissed members of the Bu-
reau cf Surveys, is Mr. John Camp, Jr., a
worthy gentleman and a competent engi-
neer. The members of the Bureau decided
that they would not let John, go, without
cvincing in a. substantial manner, their
friendship for him. The result of that de-
cision became apparent this morning at the
Board of Public Works office. The mem-
bers of the Bureau of Surveys, the clerk: in
the buildin , Commissioners Fry, Farrier,
Surber and Startup, err-Commissioner Bray,
Hon. 'Jasper Wendie and others gathered,
and the meeting was organized by the elec-
tion of N. G. Freeland, Chairman and F. H.
Curtis, secretary The chairman read an orig-
inal humorous poem, commenting upon the
characteristics of the dismissed members,
and then read the following, which was
handsomely engrossed and framed.

Ducrsron m CALIFORNIA—The fiupreme
court of California has decided that the tax-
ation of a mortgage on land, or the money
accrued thereby, and the taxation of the land
is double taxation, and therefore unconstitu-
tional. The court, in summing up the opin-
ion says :— _
“I conclude, therefore that a tax on loans
made in the usual course of business is paid
by the borrower, and if the debt be secured
by mortgage he also pays the tax on the mort-
gaged property. He is twice taxed—once on
the property and once on the debt which the
property represents—and yet no new value
has been created by the transaction? He is
no richer, and has no more property than he
had before: and if the money which he re-
ceived from the lender remained in his hands
is also taxed. If the money has passed into
the possession of another taxpayer it is taxed
in his hands ; so that the ,property and the
money are each separately taxed; and if the
mere promise or obligation of the borrower
to repay the money is also taxed and the tax
paid by him, as it must be, it is clear that he
has been twice taxed on the same value or
subject-matter. This is a violation of that
clause of the constitution which requires that
taxation shall be equal and uniform, and
that property shall be taxed in proportion to
its value. When the mortgaged property has
once paid its tax it has discharged its full
obligation to the state, and the owner of it
cannot and in justice ought not to be sub-
jected to another tax, merely because he has
borrowed a sum of money for which the
property is pledged as security.

has again visited us and taken away one of
our most esteemed citizens, John Bacon
Steele, who has gone in and out among us
for the last five years, trusted and beloved
' of all, has been called to the "rest that re-
maincth to the people of God." After a
scvefi and painful illness of about two
weeks with typhoid {overlie peacefillly pass
ed aw last Saturday evening. November
29th. ail"? o'clock, at the age of 35 years.
He was born in Castleton June 17th 1838,
son of‘Rev. Joseph Ste‘ele, whose death we
recorded nearly two years ago. He prepar-
ed for college at Castleton and Manchester,
and graduated at Middlebury College in 1860.
During his second year in college be united
with the Congregational Church in this
place, and about a year after his‘graduution
he entered tthheologicul Seminary at Au-
burn where hc graduated in 1864. He im-
mediately entered upon the work be had
chosen, preaching three years at Castile, N. .
Y., and two years at Glenwood, same state.
Then he came to Middlebury where he has
since remained, for the most part in busi-
ness but since September lst laboring in the
public school.
During his residence in Auburn he became
scqt‘tainted with Miss Sarah L. Bundle, of
Norwalk, Conn., whom he married in
1865, and who, with their three young chil-
dren, survive him.
Fully convinced from the beginning of
his illness that he should never survive it,
he conversed much with his family about
his approaching end, expressing joy for
himself, though-full of sorrow for his dear
wife and children. The whole sickness
was, in fact, a complete and glorious tri-
umph of faith in Christ over death and the
grave. His loss is deeply felt by a large cir-
cle of friends and the whole community feel
and express their deep sympathy. -
The funeral was attended from the house
on Monday afternoon, where large numbers
athercd to testify their esteem for the de-

bud recently, by appearing just as two men
were trying to effect an entrance into Miller
& Co’s. dry goods store. They fled but left
the many kindnesses and courtesies cxtond~
ed to them, and at the same time regretting
that yourconnection with the Bureau is so
soon to be severed, would ask you to accept
this testimonial of their regard and esteem."
The testimonial consisted of a handsome
porcelain-lined silver urn, mounted upon
a. fine framework of solid silver. The chas-
unostcntatious in manner, firm, honest and decided
in his convxctions, kind and sym athizing with the
Mr. Taylor was a native of New Cannon, a brother
of the late William Taylor, and will probably be
remembered by many in this vicinity. Ho settleddn
Fredonia in 1833, and has been one of its prominent
