Wall Street Litigation...
An action was begun on Saturday. NOV-
22d, against Daniel Drew and others. "“011
in connection with the suit recantl! “ought
against him by Stephen H, Alden, illustrates
the ways of professional stock operators in
Wall-st. In the previous instance, Alden
sought to. recover from Ir. Drew csospst
35. alleges... have been fraudulenty obtain-
ed by the defendant through a conspiracy
with others, by which he succeeded in de-
ceiving the plaintiff in regard to the value of
certain Quicksilver mining stock, which he
sold to II, Alden at a price far beyond its
- actual value. In the complaint in the pres-
ent suit it is alleged that at the same time
that Drew was unloading his Quicksilver
stock upon Alden he was conspiring with
him and lugene N. Robinson to unload his
Canton stock upon Biederman & 00., when
they victimized to the extent of $1,000,000,
as is charged. The main feets in the trans.
action appear in the complaint, given in fall
below. The Canton Company was organ.
lsed somewhat more than thirty years ago,
for the purpose of improving certain lands
known as Canton, and lying adjacent to the
City of Baltimore. Nearly $1,250,000 have
been expended by the Company in improve-
ments, grading streets, building piers, &c.,
and in aiding in the construction of railroads
designed to enhance the value of the prop-
erty. Stock has alQ been subscribed by the
Canton Company in various manufacturing
and industrial enterprises which it was pro-
posed to establish on their‘l'snds. The income
of the Company arose from sales of lots and
water frontage and ground rent on leased
lands. In November, 1872, the paintid‘s
claim that the capital stock of the Canton
Company was $4,429,900, of which III, Drew
owned $3,000,000; that . he represented to
the plaintifi‘ that this was of great intrinsic
value, and, in view of certain improvements
in process of completion and in contempla-
tion, would advance greatly in a short time;
but that .Robinson and Alden, also stock-
holders hsd become needlessly alarmed and
were anxious to sell out. He added that he
would not sell the stock he held under any
circumstances until it should advance to
$150 or $200 per share, its then market val-
us being about at par. Influenced solely by
these representations, and ignorant of the
actual condition or prospects of the Canton
Company, the plaintiffs allege that they pur-
chased Canton stock from Robinson & Al-
den, in all to the amount of 18,000 shares,
for which they paid $1,807,109 75, and they
aver that they believe that 15,000 shares of
this stock have- been the property of Mr.
Drew, which he quietly passed to the plain-
tifi‘s through Robinson dt Alden, who in this
transaction acted' as his brokers. The stock
never advanced above the price plaintiils
paid for it. and when they were compelled
to sell in September last they did so at a loss
of about $1,000,000. Hence the present
suit—N. Y Wu.
In view of the fact that deposits of sav-
ings banks throughout the country exceed
those of the national banks in New England
three to one, congress will, at its next ses-
sion, have its attention called through the
report on state banks to the necessity of put-
ting the government in a position to obtain
the reports of the condition of these savings
banks, in order that the monetary condition
of the country may be more easily ascer-
tained, when required for financial legisla-
tion. The plan now in contemplation as
the proper one to be recommended to con-
gress for the purpose is to tax the. deposits
in these saviugsbanks one-hundredth of one
per cent, and impose a'penalty on all banks
neglecting to make returns. _

Philip Smith, of Waterbury, recently
met with an unpleasant and painful mishap.
He went to the bernbetween five and six
o’clock, to do his chores. While on the
second floor, engaged in feeding the horse,
it being dark at‘the time, he stepped 'into
the feeding spout, which passes into the
manger below. As he fell, he instinctively
threw up his hands, and in this position, his
hands above his‘head', passed downinto the
spout about afoot: from the bottom, where
he stuck, powerless to extricate himself or
move any part of his person. Here he re-
mained until nine o’clock, when a passer
by heard some one halleing and groaning
in the barn. He procured assistance, and
going to the barn, succeeded in extricating
the unfortunate man. It was necess y to
pry and saw the spout to pieces, and was
fully half an hour before they were 'able to
liberate Mr. Smith. When lifted out and
laid on the door, he, lost all consciousness,
and his flesh. turned a‘ vivid purple color.

cost ofcollecting the revenues, and his re-
port which has just been brought in, recom-
mends the entire redistricting of the Atlan-
tic coast, the consolidation of some of the
smaller districts, and the abolition of most
of them. Thirteen Kaine ports are gtven,
one in New Hampshire, and thirty-three
others,besides the" list given below. The
reports from this State are these, the
name of the portcoming first, thenthc
customs receipts, and last the cost of collec-
tion: Newburyport, $50,450.78, $0,800.-
000; Gloucester, $5,002.80, $10,911.00 ;
Salem, $48,308.17," $17,022.48; ‘Marblehead,
0588.14, $1,657.70;gPiymonth, ”2,110.09,
88,802.08; Fall River. $210,724.01, 88,560,80;
Barnstable, $2,855.38, $8,005.00; N cw Bed-
ford, $40,867.26, $10,810.59; Edgartown,
“78.91, 00,650.07; Nantucket, nothing, $1,-
000.28- The climax is reached in Nan-
tucket, where the expenses ef the establish-
ment were almost two thous'aud dollars and
the receipts zero. The same thing occurs
eleven times more in the list, the most note.
, his case being} that of St. Augustine, Fla,
where tho"ex_penscs were $6,741.08, and the
receipts nothing." The best item by far is
that of Fall River, while :Key ‘West, Fla,
comes next, with $242,018.52 receipts for
$16,529.84 expenditure. But the majority
of cases reported show "a larger total of out-

has often been taken to illustrate Divine
wisdom—and very well. But have you ever
examined your horse's ,hoof. It is hardly
less curious in its way. , Its parts are some-
what mcrc complicated, yet their design is
simple and obvious. The hoof is not, as it
appears to the careless eye, a mere lump of
dnsensible bone, fastened to the leg by a joint.
It is made up of a series of thin layers, or
leaves of horn,about 500 in. number, and
nicely fitted to each other, and forming a li-

many more layers, belonging to what is
called the “coma bone,” and fitted into this.
These are elastic. Take a quire of paper
and insert the leaves one by one into those
of another quire, and you will get some idea
of the arrangement of the several layers-

many elastic springs as there are in his four
feet—about 4,000; and all this is contrived,
not only for the conveyance of his own body!

things in the world. For the sake of the
' test I will give it two insertions free. Two
will be enough; and you may have it jam-
med into any out of the way nook of my
paper you shall select. Two insertions of
only two lines. _Will you try it ?" '

On the following morning he opened his
paper, and after a deal of hunting he found
his advertisement. At first it did not seem
at all conspicuous. Certainly so insignifi-
eunt a paragraph, buried in such a wilder-
ness of paragraphs, could not attract notice.
After a time, however, it began to look
more noticeable to him. The more he
looked at it the plainer it grew. Finally
it glared at him from the closely printed
page. But that was because he was the
person interested. Ofcoursc it would ap-
pear conspicuous to him. But it could not
be so to others, "

Six times Butler Was interrupted while
taking tea by men with dogs to sell. Buf-
ier was a man that would not lie. He had
put his foot in, and he must take it outmah-
tully. Tho twenty-third applicant was a
small boy with a girl in company, who, had
a rugged, dirty poodle for sale. Buffer
bought the poodle oi the boy, and immedi-
ately presented it to the girl, and then sent
them off. '
To the next applicant he was able truth~
fully to answer—“Don’t want any more.
I’ve bought one.'
The strcam of callers continued until
near ten o’clock, at which hour Butler
locked up and turned off the gas.
On the following evening 'as Bud'er ap-
proached his house, he found a crowd as-
sembled. Heedunted thirty-nine men and
boys each’onc of whom had a dog in tow.
"There were dogs of every grade, sine and
color, and grow], and howl. Butler address?
ed the motley multitude,:and info ed them
that he had purchased a dog.
“Then what d‘ycr advertise for ‘2"
And Buii‘cr got his hat knocked over his
eyes before he‘reached the sanctuary of his
home. L '
Never mind about the trials and tribula-
tions of that night. Bufi'er bad no idea
that there were so many dogs in existence.
With the aid of three policemen he got
through alive. On the next _morning he
visited his friend the editor and acknowl-
edged the corn. The advertisement of
“wanted” was taken out, and in the-most
conspicuous place, and in glaring type, he
advertised that he didn't want any more
dogs. And for this he paid. Tim: he
went home and posted upon his door—
“Gone into the country.” Then he hired a
special policeman to guard his propertys
and thenhe locked up-and'wcnt away with _
his family. '
From that day Josephus Butler has never
been heard to express doub‘is concerning
the efficacy of printer’s ink; neither has he
asked, “ Who reads advertisements ?"—Ne1e

and money is reported by a Detroit paper.
It says:—-A man named Robinson, who
says that he works in the car-shops at the
Grand Trunk junction, parted with $10 on
Saturday in a very unsatisfactory manner.

A couple lately married themselves at
Glidden, Iowa, in the presence of church
and congregation. They simply announced
their intention, and then they kissed each

Samuel Adams, 33844, organist of the
Central Methodist Episcopal Church,
Brooklyn, in South Fifth st., near Fifth
ave, died suddenly while playing the or-
gan in the church one evening last week.
Considerable commotion was created in the
Congregation by the occurrence.
Jinks had been indulging too freely in ar-
dent epirits. At a street corner his hat drop-
ped into the gutter. Says Jinks: “I know—
ifI pick you up I'll fell—ifI fall you won't
whiz—.mphic—up—good-nightl” And he
walked off with a smile of satisfaction' de-
scribing innumerable signage as he went
leaving his hat in the gutter.
Afather in Iowa was ejected from his
own parlor by his daughter’s lover, and
brought suit therefor. But he lost his case;
the Justice having decided that courting is
aneccssiiy and must not: be interrupted;
consequently a parent has no right in a
room where courting is going on. The
lover was discharged, and the father had to
pay the costs.
