On Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Burns

hired a horse and buggy from the stable of
Mr. Wallace Dann of the above named
place for the purpose of visiting Mr.
Michael Rice of Saugatuc'k. They arrived
there safely, spent the day, had a good
time, and drove to thelvillage of' Westport
where they continued their enj oyment. As
the shades of night began to fall, they start-
ed full of “spirits,”for New Caitaan. When
descending the hill near the residence of
Mrs. William Jones, the 'driver of the
- vehicle became lost'in reverie .and allowed
his steed to make 'too Close acquaintance
with the wayside. At an unexpected mo-
ment the vehicle upset, throwing the trio to
the ground, breaking the ribs of both men-
and injuring the woman. The horse 'fell
also, and striking his head on _a stone
instantly expired. The wounded parties
were cured for-b; Dr. Benton, and were
afterwards tak It to their homes. The

BURGLARY.—Tbe saloon of Mr. Edward
Goldschniidt, on Water Street, was entered
by burglars on Friday night last, and robbed
ofcigars, brandy, &c., probably worth in
the neighborhood 'of fifty dollars. Mr.
Goldschmidtofi‘ors a reward of $25 for the
arrest and conviction of the thieves.

The gale on Monday night was one of the
most severe known in thisphrt of the coun-
try,,for years. The sloop “Silsbc,” Capt. A. ‘
Smith, went on a rock in Stamford Harbor
