Cutaneous—John Cable, in the employ
of Chas. Hull,had a cancer cut from his
chin recently, and is doing quite well.
Platt Brush is just alive from having a can-
cer cut from his cheek, he havingtrusted
the operation of cutting to a friend. Penny
wise and pound foolish. .
Burglars visited the house of Mr. George
Andrews recently.
Morris Griffin, of the firm of
Bros, died Tuesday last. .
Chas. Trowbridge, of the firm of Trow-
bridge ’& Klein, was stricken with apo-
plexy on Sunday week, and died on Mon-
day. - ‘
McPhilemy, a liquor dealer on White
4 street, had a horse stolen from him Friday
last. '

bought largely of mauutacturers, giving in
payment draits on New York. By showing
these large bills to retail dealers then he
succeeded in buying revolvers, gold watch
and chain, &c., paying by drafts on ,New
York. His game was soon found out how-
ever, and he was promptly arrested and
lodged in jail, where he attempted suicide.
Bis attempt was foiled and he will have a
trial before the criminal court of the city.

A train on the New York road was stop-
grad between West Haven and Milford,
hursday afternoon, some one having pul—
led the bell-rope, and after very much coutu-

been pulled by. an excited passenger, whose
“purp” had jumped out ofa car window. The
guilty passenger was accused of idiocy at
once by the conductor and got off the train
expeditiously to hunt up his canine. The

A Bridgeport youth. being recently threat-
ened with severe punishment it‘ he did not
commit to memory two certain letters of the
alphabet, appeared at school next day with
those letters punched out, and triumphantly
demanded to know how he was expected to
learn them.
Saturdayr evening a Tashua gentleman, ac-
companie by his wife and another lady,
drove to Seaside Park, Bridgeport. to attend
the band concert. In returning the horse
ran to Trumbull’ when he took the railroad
track. A train came down upon him and
horse and carriage were made a melancholy
wreck. The horse was found next day hor-.
ribly mangled and Was killed.
- An insurrection was caused among the
laundresses in Carr’s factory-at Bridgeport
by the introduction of half a dozen male
ironers.
A lady about 60 years old, caught her foot *
against a rail at the South avenue crossing,
Bridgeport, Thursday, and fell across the
ack. Two or three cars ofthe freight train
om New Haven had been switched ofl‘ and
Timothg‘ReagIn,’ the switch-tender on the
N. Y. N. . road, promptly seized and _

picnic on Thursday last, at “Hockanum.'.’
The country residence of Mr. do Mrs. Morris
Ketcbum, by special invitation. These
grounds in their present beautiful shape,sre,
in a liberal sense the work of Mr. Ketchums
hands. They were once a swamp“ and wild
mum in which the animal creation. much
less man, would hardly have chosen a dwel-
ling place. Over thirty years Igo, Mr.
Ketchum began to demonstrate what could
be done in the way of reclaiming these lands.
Nature come to his assistance, and to-day,
without doubt the grounds are the finest in
New England, both as to extent and attrac-
tiveness. A superb growth offoreIt and fan-
cy trees add to the charm of the locality, and
beneath them the Society proceeded to
enjoy themselves. Not less than four hun-
dred persons comprised the visitors. Mrs.
Ketchum opened 'wide the doors of her pala-
tial residence to them, and their bones and
carriages were snugly disposed of among
the stables and barns. Everything that
could be done to make the visit pleasant
and enjoyable was done. Tables were
spread beneath the trees, and loaded with
all those pastry delicacies which the ladies
so well know how to provide. The scene
of so many youthful happy faces was one to
be enjoyed and not soon to be forgotten. A
feature of the occasion too, was the presence
of the more mature, and their hearty par '
ticipation in the festivities. It is well on
such occasions for young and old to mingle
together. The table demolition was fol-
lowed by croquet and other games on the
green swords. Impromptu singing, a short
address by Dr. Sanderson, ice-cream and

has arranged to give the children of the

Somebody hired a horse of Mr.‘Edward
Jones, New Canaan, on Thursday last. He
drove somewhere and failed to return the
horse.
GREENWICH.
Arrangements are being made by a large
and active committee of citizens for the re-
ception and entertainment of the veterans
of the old Tenth Regiment, which event is
.to take place on the 25th inst. Col. Hoyt
is chairman of the committee. Meetings of
the Ladies committee, and the general com-
mittee were to have been held yesterday, lst.
A strange afi‘air occurred last; week.
Some excitement has been caused by recent
burglaries, and last Friday morning} about
3 o’clock, a man was discovered under
suspicious circumstances, who ran away
when hailed. He was pursued and shot,
two balls taking effect, when he was cap-
tured after sharp resistance. The pursuero
were astonished to find that they had
wounded and captured a_ minister—Rev.
John Moore, who had been in the neighbor-
hood several weeks, and who recently
lectured in Norwalk and other places upon
“Science and the Bible.” He failed to give
an account of himself satisfactory to his
captors, and was held for examination.

STAMFORD.
The veteran doctor Height was presented
on Saturday the 23 ult. With a handsome
carriage, costing-upwards of $300. It was
a testimonial from old friends and patients.
The Titania won the prize at the Stam-’
ford Regatta on Saturday the 23d. There
is to be another contest on the Oth inst, for
a silk flag and pennant. ‘ -
The Grand Lodge of Good Samaritans of
‘ the State of Connecticut, will meet in the
Lodge Room of Excelsior Lodge, No. 6, in
Quintard’s building, on Saturday, Sept. 6,
at 10 o’clock A. M. .
The new bank building of the .First
National Bank of Stamford, elaborately fit-
ted' up and containing all the necessities
and conveniences for the business that in-
genuity could suggest, is now so for ad-
