The trial of the hotel keeper-tor selling
liquor without a license, after several weeks
delay, tool: placent 'Danbury last week, and

people, who feel much elated thereat, and
will go for other transgressors with re-
newed energy.

Another one of those pleasant receptions
came ofi'at Miss Rice’s Seminary on Thurs-
day evening. last. . The young ladies ap-
peared in a~series of highly interesting gym-
nastic ' exercises, and evinced very careful
training. Some of their evolutions showed
“drill” unsurpassed by our best military or-
ganizations,'and the manner of handling
their wands convinced us 'of'woman’s capa-
bility of “bearing arms” in an emergency.
Among other ‘cxcrcises, the “anvil chorus”
with wooden dumb bells, was very pleasing.
The gymnastic exercises were varied with
piano music by several of the pupils. The
school is now closed for the summer. The
prospects for the fall term are\flatlering.
Miss Rice is soon to sail for Europe, accom-
panied by Miss Biglow. ,
. The Strawberry Festival held by the
ladies of the Congregational Society, on ac-
count of several conflicting local events, was
not so largely attended as hoped for, but
still passed off pleasantly, and netted quite a.
little sum to the treasury. '
On Wednesday evening Col. Vincent Col-
yer addresseda good audience of his friends
and neigthrs, ,at' Fitch’s Hall, detailing
some of his experiences in the Far West.

A horse belonging to Mr. J.‘__ Taylor
Adams of the Saugatuck market, fell dead
While on theroad from the depot to West-
port, Friday evening. The horse had given
no indications during the day of illnesg, had
been driven as usual, and the immediate
cause of the sudden demise is a query
amdng horsemen.
The physical slreugeh of Mr. James
Perry has held out wonderfully, bearing
him through-the test resulting frotn shock
by falling, over two weeks ago. On Fri-
day the neighbors were surprised to see
him walking out of doors.
The Ladies Aid Society met in Stamford
on the 13th. Delegations of ladies from
both Episcopal churches here, accompanied
by the Reclors, were present. They are
doing much good work. The next meeting
will be held in Westport.
The marriage of Mr. II. S. Sherwood,
Teller First National Bank, and Miss Alice
Doten, took place at Christ church, at 12,30
o’clock on Wednesday, in presence of at
church full of people. Rev. Jno. R. Wil-
liams tied the nuptial knot, and the organ-
ist gave the wedding march! Choice
flowers had been arranged about the altar
by friendly hands, and the scene was a
pleasing, and at the same time impressive
one. The bride was recipient of many
presents, prominent among which was a
fine Bible given by members of the church
in token of appreciation of her services for
a long time in the choir. The wedding'

Emma, June 10th.-—An explosion of fire
damp occurred at the Henry Clay collicry,
near Shamokcn, Pa. , this afternoon. Short- ‘

in tile mine at last accounts, bu efforts are
being made to get them out.
