A Singular Ceremony.
From the subjoiued sketch of a Jewish
wedding in Algeria, extracted from the
recent work of Lady Herbert. on “Algeria
in 1871,” will be sceh what a fearful and
Wonderful thing the wedding ceremony, as
practiced at'the present day in that country,
is. Particularly harsh-it is upon the poor
bride, so much so that our American maids
would doubtlessjdeelare, almost to a man,
that sooner than endure all the steaming,
scrubbing, fumigating, parboiling, dresssiug,
undressing, hallooing, psalm-siuging, and
miscellaneous torture described by the
tourist, they would remain single all their
born days. The account runs thus in .Lady
H.’s language:
We paused in our sight-seeing to, go with
Mme. de .C—and her beautiful daughter
to see a Jewish wedding, for which she had
kindly obtained as an invitation. We were
receiyed in an alcoved room, whereabreak-
fast of swectments, cakes and sweet wines
were set out, the bride and her parent.

This is the same' honor as that conferred
upon Professor Morse by Spain for his in-
vention of the telegraph, and is, one of
which any man may justly feel proud. The
special invention which led to this is the
improvement in revolvers, patented by Mr.
Dodge in 1865, and which has since been
adopted by our own and nearly all foreign
Governments. The manufacturers, Smith
& Wesson, of Springfield, are now filling
an order for fifty thousand for the Russian
Government. _
For years past Mr. Dodge has made a spe
ciaity of fire-arms,‘and during our war did
more than any other one man to make
known the advantages and secure the adop-
tion .of breech-loaders He has honestly
earned his honors, and we congratulate him
upon his success.
