Mr. A. S. J-trvis of the Weston Military
Institute, gave an entertainment on Friday
evening last. Quite a number of ladiesaud
gentleman from this place attended.
The regular semi-monthly sociable of the
Congregational church society took place
on Monday evening of last week at 1111'-
house of Mrs. H. H. Beldcn. The new
pastor, Rev. Dr. Sanderson, takes great in-
terest in their gatherings and they will
hereafter be held regularly at the heuses of
parishioners.
Saturday’s snow ind-iced many Sleighs
to‘makeiheir appearance. It was rough
traveling in the morning, but towards night
the hubs toned down to something like
respectable consistency, and merry sleigh
hells were heard at every hand. -
National'Hall was the scene of a gay and
festive dance last Friday night, it being tht-
occasion of the last entertainment by the
National Soiree Club. One hundred and
five persons accepted invitations,'aurl danc-
ing to the music of Gnycr’s quadrille band
was kept up till 4% o’clock on Saturday
morning Refreshments were served at 12
o’clock, and such pcrsons'as did not care to
dance were provided with tables, cards, and
chess men. The ladies presented elegant
toilets, and diamonds flashed contrast with
the tints of natural flowers. The gentle-
men wcroin full dress, and taken in all rc-
spccts it was the most select gathering ever
drawn together in Westport. ,

The death of William S. Burwcll last
. summer, removed the only person in town
bearing the name of But-well. A few days
hence, the homestead which fell to him by
his father, the l tte Mayor Burwell, and who
occupied it for so many years, will, by pub-
lic auction pass into the hands of strangers.
Thermometers fell‘to zero again on Sun-
day morning, and still lower during Sunday
night. .
The 22d was observed only nominally in
in town. The First National Bank closed
its dent's, and 21 fewer number of ladies than
usual out shopping in the afternoon added

On Friday last, Mr. George Lockwood, in
the employ of Mr. E. D. Howe, attached 60
panel doors valued at $2.00 each, to satisfy
a claim of $39.93 against the said. Howe,
who has carried on the Sash & Blind busi-
ness at Mr. E. H. Nash's mill during the
past year. At present Mr. Howe is estab-
iablishcd in Norwalk, and hearing of Lock
wood’s action._aud with the idea to head
him off. went to a Mr. Abraham Clark, with
whom Lockwood boarded, and to whom
he (L.) 'was indebted, and induced Clark to
factorize him (H.) for the sum of $50. Dep-
uty Cable was called on to servethc papers.
L. hearing that Cable was in search of him,
went to Clark, paid the bill. and took a re-
ccipt, thus cutting the corners of the prose.

Dennis Burncs, on Wednesday, attempted
to murder James Medley, a leamstcr, in
Greenwichjn couscqucnco. of an old quarrel
"between the two. Burns had been asked

a pistol and fired four shots at Menlcy.
Only one shot took effect, and that in the

The Hanford Cane. ‘
On Saturday last a hearing was had at the
office of Messrs.~Fcrry, Woodward & Perry.
before a Committee of the Court, in the case
brought by Mrs. Abigail Hunford, widow of
Zalmon Hanford, to recover the propcri y on
North Union Avet'lue now claimed by
Messrs. Weeks, Uhle, Fitch, Jennings and
Mrs. L. A. Smith. At the time the petitioner '
brought this case, we gave a full statement
of her claim.and it, will not, therefore, be
necessary now to enter into the details, and
the following particulars will suffice. Some
fifty years ago, the petitioner’s husband
mortgaged his life-iLtercst in a lot of land
lying at the foot of Pudding Lauc(so-ca1lcd)
containing four acres, more or less. T ht
mortgage was foreclosed, and Mr. Hanford
The land was'eveutually sold ofi‘in build- L
ng lots (the sellers claiming a good title.)
and houses built thereon and the entire
property covered with valuable improve-
ments. After a lapse of fifty years, the pe—
titioner comes forward and claims the en-
tire property, stating that her husband died
in 1869, and that the property rightfully re-
cgts to her. As a matter of course the
cople who have honestly purchased and

The case washeard before Judge Dwight
Loomis, as Committee, Mr. E. J. Beach: of
New, York. and Messrs. chi Warner and
Asa B. Woodward of Norwalk, appearing
for petitioner, and ‘Messrs. S. B: Beardsley of
Bridgeport and Wm. Randcl Smith of Nor
walk, for respondents. The morning was
taken up with the offering of evidence. Du-
'ing the afternoonihc taking of testimony
commenced, and Messrs. Eli, B. Bennett,
Henry Lamb and Charles Adams were ex-
amined. Considerable “'skirmishing” was
indulged in by the lawyers, and the progress
was slow, and to outsiders the trial was de-
cidedly dull and uninteresting. -Owing to
other engagements of Judge and lawyers
the case could not be continued yesterday,
and was adjourned until some future time,
probably in- March, as may hereafter be
agreed upon.

Mr. R. Bayard Snbwdcn’s lecture on this
topic last evening, at- the Howe Street
church. deserves more than a passing men-
tion. .It was a vivid and varied picture of
life in Close pleasant islands, conveying a
great amount of information, sosugumoat-
cd with wit or gilded with funcy that it was
very pleasant to take, notwithstanding the
declaration of one .of our favorites of the
platform that “there is nothing an audience
hates so mttch as information.” Mr. Snow-
den knows how to select from his traveler’s
budget, a'nd how to set out his observations
so that they will strike the mental eye and
stay in the memory liken picture. The au-
dicncc was an appreciate one, and would
haw been much larger had the merits ofthe
lecture been known, as there are large num-
bers in that vicinity who appreciate a'
pleasant and profitable evening within easy
reach of home. The late “Howe Street
church” has been transformed into a very
