NEW CANAAN.
A supper is to be given at the Town Hall,
on the evening of the slst inst, under the
auspices Of the Independent Order Of Good
Templars. Addresses will also be given by
Rev. Mr. Shepherd, of Mount Vernon, and
others. This will be good place for New
Canaan people to spend New Year’s Eve,
and, if sleighing holds good, an excellent
rendezvous for parties from all the neighbor-
ing villages. -
WESTPORT.
Our town authorities have introduced a
plan fcncompelling obedience to their man-
dhies. They announce by printed signs,
and by written nOtices posted, that people
must not: drive rapidly across the new draw.
Some headed and some did not. Delin-
quents to the number of four or five, with a
prospect of more to follow, have been or-
rested and fined. Still, there is an abund-
ance of violators and much vexatiOn.
A few days since Mr. W. R. McCrendy
drove at some speed across our draw, with
no intent, aswc learn, to defy the town’s
prescriptions. An hour later he was told
that he might be complained'of, and hasten-
ing back, appeared before a village justice,
stated his case and paid $1.00 fine..
Memorial Church will present a tasty ap-
pearance to morrow. Being designed and
built in strict ecclesiastical style, floral and
evergreen decorations shew toadvantage in
it. A service with appropriate music has
been appointed. Every year since its com-
pletion in 1836, a Christmas Eve service has
been held at Christ Church. .It will keep
up the good old custom tonight when music
of a high order and a sermon by the Rooter
$2,000'in filtingit tip in suitable stile for
their, purposes. It willbe the finest Mason-
ic hall in the State next to that of New
Haven. ‘
Lawyer lestead’shouse caught fire on
Monday afternoon week, but timely aid
from neighbors and the fire department ex-
tinguished it before much damage was done.

One case of mysterious disappearance
has lately been cleared. A Mr. Cox of New
York, a telegraph operator, left his post one
day tor a moment, and on the next he was
not there, nor on the next. Time rolled on,
and anxiety gave way to despair among his
friends, when one day a few weeks later, he
appeared, perfectly sane, in mind and body.
He had been to see a friend sail on one of.
the foreign steamers. The vessel bad start-
ed while he was below the deck. The pilot
agreed to take him back anti forgot or omit-
ted to do so, and he was carried to Glasgow.
He returned by the next boat and as he was
sea sick throughout both trips. he does not
regard the atl'air as a success.
