' The bill reforming (2?) the Internal Revenue
service, passed the House, went to the
Sanate, and was there slightly amended, but
on its return to the House for approval of
the Senate's amendments, it encountered up
position, and yesterday a committee of con-
- fcrcncc was appointed to confer with the
' Senate on the disagreeing votes. The main
point ot‘hoslilily to the bill is in that ll pre-
tends to a reduction of the Internal Revenue
collection expenses by discontinuing the as-
sessors. But in lieu thereof, the bill as
amended, provides that tbcir‘places shall be
substituted by a batch of Internal Revenue
Detectives to traverse the districts. This
feature of the bill leads many Congressmen
to the opinion that little or no saving of ex-
pense or improvement of the service will re-
sult from the change.
The hills for purchasing additional
grounds for the Boston post office, and to
abate duties on material to be used in re-
building thc burnt district in that city, have
given occasion for the expression ofvicws
of anti-stale sovereignty doctrines, quite ad~
verse to our old New England notions. It
is plainly to be seen that this question is
sooner or later to become one of grave im-
» port in this country, and already are our
ablest statesmen at varicncc upon it.
The Senate committee on naval affairs,
after listening to Secretary Robeson, agreed
to report a bill in favor of the construction
of ten new naval steamers instead of six as
voted by the House. There is great diver-
sity of opinion among naval constructors in
their preferences for wood or iron in the
construction of sea-going vessels. The in-
evitable tendency to corrosion in iron and
their liability to break at the point of rivet-
ing, and thus fill and founder at sea, lead
many to affirm that very soon iron will be
discarded for thegmlls of vessels. The vast
numbers ofiron vessels known and supposed
to have been lost by reason ofbrcakage from
corrosion wouldseem to justify the growing
want of confidence in iron for ship building.
The House gave quite an unusual allot—
ment of'time to‘Connccticut - on Friday. A
Waterbury extension case, for a patent for
the. manufacture of brass kettlespccupied its
time for over an hour. Thebill had passed
the Senate last session without opposition,
but it was resolutely fought in the House
and finally lost by a vote of 60 to 64. The
State was joked fonits monopoly in the use
of brass, but it was easy to reply that we
only used it to supply thc‘demand for it in
other sections of the Union.
. Gen. Hawley made an effective and
maiden speech of five minutes on Thursday
in opposition to the passage of the Soldier‘s
Land Bounty Bill, in its present objection-‘
able form.
The two Houses having agreed to adjourn
- over from Friday, the 20th, to the 3d of Jan-
uary, there will be no possible chance of
getting up our Norwalk Harbor appropria-
tion bill before the 'new year. The House
committee on appropriationshave agreed to
report $100,000 to defray'the expenses of
the American part in the Vienna World‘s
Exposition. A 'vote has been received to
pay $20,000 to defray the cost of printing
‘bond or script for subscriptions to our own
Centennial Exposition to be holden at Phil-
adelphia in 1876.‘ Gen. Bank’s proposition
to increase the President’s salary to $50,000
per year, has given rise to a good deal of dis-
cussion, and opinion is divided as to its
probable success. The. postal" telegraph
system dcfiretkby~Mn Cresswell, is being
vigorously resisted, and we doubt its success
in this Congress. ‘ '
Theinvestigation ,of the Credit Mobilier
Scandal is an absorbing Congressional topic.
The investigation is conducted as secretly
as such things ever can .be,. and yet
it is evident there is a lamentable amount
of truth in much that has been given
to the country by the reporters. Whether
any members of Congress will be shown to
have been influenced in their votes by a gift
ofits shares, we of course do not know, nor
do we believe such 'showing will result
Yet, that a questionable disposition of this
stock was made,docs notseem to be doubted
by anybody having any knowledge of the
subject. _
Vice President Colfax has been the past
two days in New York, in negotiation, it is
said, with the stockholders of the Tribune
for the place made vacant by the death ,of
Mr. Greeley. The arrangement will be a
wise and capital one for the Tribune, for in
no other way can that great news paper so
easily be restored to the confidence, afi'eclion
and firesides of its old patrons and readers,
while 10 Mr. Colfax, it, with its honor,
power and pay of 820.000 per annum, is a
well-earned promotion to the honest, labo-
rious and far from wealthy legislator.
The Louisiana and South Carolina em-
broglios have caused much anxious com-
ment in political circles, and few seem to be
«able to clearly see the end from the begin-
ning. It is to be regretted so grave a scandal
might not be spared our American system
of free government. ,
The vacant Marshalship of the U. S. Su-
preme Court has he been filled by the ap-
pointment of Mr. Nicolay, former secretary
to President Lincoln. o
The Commissioner of Patents has recently
decided that an article of manufacture, in
Order to be patentable as such, must be so
' different from others as not only to be'dis-
tingulshable, but to indicate invention. He
has also rejected an application fora patent,
heause the alleged invention exhibited only
mechanical skill and judgment, and was not
sufficiently useful and important in view of
the advanced state of art to which it per-
taincd.
It was left to the expertncss and vigilant
scrutiny ofa Connecticut lady clerk in the
Treasury, to detect the $500 bogus note
which; had ' escaped detection by bank
officials, and been sent to the treasury for
redemption. It came from Chicago, and is
said to be the most finished bit of counter-
feiting yet. discovered. It was a $5 and a
$100 bill evenly split throughtbe center and
pasted on to a back split from another bill,
and so nicely adjusted that the fine took the
place of the one in the figure mark and
printed word as perfectly as in the genuine
bill. It is to-be retained as a specimen of
mosaic work in counterfeiting.
Our Anthony Comstock has been making
a sensation here, upon the invitation of. the
Y. M. C. A. of this city, and with a view to
further and more effective legislation in
- reference to commerce in obscene literature.
Last evening, by request, he lectured before
the'male members of the training class of
christian workers, at their. rooms, and to
night he had an audience at the house of
Senator Pomeroy, with a, number of mem.
bers ofboth houses :of Congress, hoping to
secure their cooperation in framing such a
law as will help to save the youth of our
land from fl“? appalling evil. He said one
plan of the publishers of this literature is to
send circulars offering to pay for lists of
names for a directory pf young persons, and
when the lists are obtained no pay is seat,
but advertisements of these infernal pro-
ductions are mailed to the names and ad-
dresses received, and then the lists are copied
and soidto other publishers ofsimilar works.
He had an ' account book containing the
' names of 6,000 dealers in the United States,
and he proposed hereafter to publish the
names of parties whOSc orders may he found
among the papers seized. Rev. Mr. Hall

. The Town Meeting;
' The annualTown Meeting for the hearing
of Reports was held yesterday afternoon, at
the Town House. Andrew Selleck, Esq,
occupied the chair. The annual report of
the Selectman was read,-aceepted and or-
dered printer]. Itwillbc found in fill in
to-day's paper, and will be found a docu-
ment of much local interest. The Report ot
lbs Town Treasurer and Treasurer of the
School Fund, were read, accepted ard or-
dered on tile. The School Visitors‘ Report
was then read, and we propose to publish
it entire in our next, having been unable to
get it in type for this issue. It was voted to
appropriate the sum of $24,289 for school
purpoaes, for the ensuing year, in accordance
with the estimate oflho School Visitors, and
the time of holding school was set at forty-
two weeks in the year. The usual tcu tnlll
tax was laid, and the, sum of $0,000 was ap-
propriated for highways. The matter of
damages to Capt. Byxbee was indefinitt'ly
postponed. There was not a very large at-
tendance present, but there was no lack of
animated discussion,
The Agricultural Soclcty. ‘
The. annual meeting of the County Agri-
cultural Society takes place at the Opera
House on Wednesday. This is a very im-
portant meeting, as the managers for the
new year are. to be selected. We trust that
no election will be hastily made but that
due consideration of the duties of every
office will be had, and only men of expe-
rience and thorough capabilities, who have
the interests of the Society al'heart, will be
chosen. I
Axornnn Hanson—A disastrous fire oc~
curred at the Fifth Avenue Hotel last Tues-
day night. It orignaled in the south-west
part of the building, in the third story, and
immediately swept up the staircase to the
upper stories, cutting off allmeans 6f escape
from the servants‘ rooms. Tire hotel engine
failed to control the fire, and several city
companies were summoned and fought the
flames for a couple of hours, confining the
fire to that portion of the elegant building
and finally extinguishing it. When an ex-
amination was made of the servant’s quar-
ters the dead bodies of eleven women were
found, they having been stifled with the heat
and‘smokc. Wire gratings prevented escape
from the windows to neighboring roofs.
The damage to the building was something
over‘0100,000, but the damage to the future
business of the hotel cannot be estimated.
Can nothing he done for the protection of
our citizens traveling through New York
city ? him after man is assaulted and rob-
bed in the 4th avenue cars, in broad day-
light, with conductors looking on, and still
‘there is no redress, and the victim has only
the consideration thathe escaped with his
life. Numbers of our. citizens have thus
lost valuable watches and other property,
and no effort seems to be made to stop the
operation of the thieves. On Saturday last,
Mr. H. Benedict, of South Norwalk was
robbed. He went down on the 6 a. in. train,
taking a 4th avenue car down town,having
his overcoat buttoned up. At Union Square
he was hustled by a gang of men. who
forced his coat up, took his pocketbook from
his pantaloons pocket and then let him go.
He says the conductor stood by but did not
offer to interfere. Who will be the next
victim ?

One of the most useful things we have
seen in many a day, is a simple little con-
trivance intending to take the place of the
clumsy clothes-horse in the kitchen during
washing-day. it is an ornamental halfcirclc
of iron, about fourinches acrbss, with slots
for inserting ten wooden slats, which radiate
from the iron section like the spokes of a
carriage-wheel. It is it. great economizer of
room, as it can be serewed on a wooden-
mantel or wall, and the slats readily taken
out when not required for use. Willie Nash
has the agency for this vicinity’, and it can
be seen at the store of Nash & Ives, Main
street. We advise all family then to call in
and look at one. '

Prof. Gardner the great Soap Man had a
great crowd of ladies and gentlemen at the
Town House, at New Canaan, last Friday
evening, besides a great crowd went away
who could not get into the Hall. Unbound-
cd applause greeted the Professor with an
invitation to call again.

The attendance at the Y. M. C. A. lecture
last Wednesday evening was not large.
We regret the fact exceedingly, because
these entertainments are expensive and
cannot be maintained unless generously
patronized. We trust our people will
encourage the young men by better attend-
ance hereafter. The lecture on this occa-
sion was of an interesting nature, but not
calculated to create much enthusiasm. The
speaker was modest and dilfident, and in no-
wisc resembled his brother, “Henry Ward,"

The First Congregational Society met on
Friday afternoon last, and by a large vote
endorsed the action of the Church in calling
Rev. J. J. Hough to the pastorate.
'Mr. George H. Noble, one of the directors
of the Housatonic Railroad died Wednesday
evening about seven o'clock at his residence
in New Milford, after a lingering illness. ,
Bishop, Williams has issued a pastoral
letter appointing Friday, Dec. 20th, as “a
day of intercession to the Lord of the bar-
vest for an increased supply of Missionaries."
This evening, at the Oflra House, we are
to be entertained withthe sensational drama

Mr. William Marvin, Down Town, lost a
valuable young horse, last Tuesday. It was

were cut ad, and he was found several hours
after, walking around ' on the bleeding

The Greeley will case came up Friday in
the Westchester surrbgate’s court, when the
factvwas'developed that-Miss Ida Greeley
bad deeded half the property left by her
father’s last will to her sister Gabrielle,
merely reserving the right to superintend
her education and affairs duringher minor-
ity. _ .
The Norwalk Lock Company are to give
up their New York store, 'which they have
already rented, reserving only space for a
Sample Room. This change is made be-
cause buyers now prefer to deal directly at
the Manufactbry, 'and will he a gain to Nor-
walk as it will transfer the principal office
of the Company to this place.
One of our wide-awake wholesale grocers,
who is always willing to “warrant goods-as

Rev. W. H. Thomas is to lecture on “The
Art of Living,”-—a-fine art subject in these
times,—-'nt the First M. E. Church, on Wed-
nesday evening. The admission is low, but
the church is large and comfortable. Tire
popularity of the lecturer is not confined to
his own church, and our people, we are sure,
will show their appreciation by giving him
the largest audience “ the lecture season. '
A committee from the South Norwalk
City Council, accompanied by the War-
den, 'Water Commissioners and Burgesses of
the Borough made an examination of the
Water Works of the Borough on Saturday
morning last. They visited both Reservoirs
and expressed themselves highly pleased
Willi the quality and quantity of Water as
also the size and workmanship of Reservoirs '
and were fully satisfied of the ability of the
works to furnish all the wafir likely to be
required by the two villages for- years to
come. ' .
