The curious Saugatuck Bridge case is end-
ed, and jhdgment rendered against the
town of Westport in the sum of $21,000 with
interest and costs of litigations, amounting
in all to about $27,000. The case has been
before the courts since 1869, during which
year the bridge was completed and Opened
‘ to travel. The scheme for a bridge at Sau-
gatuck was first proposed by the late Francis
B.‘ Cutting, and backed by many wealthy
resident property owners. It had wealthy
opponents also. During the Summer of
1869 an appropriation of $21,000 was made

fused to allow payment, and placed an in-
junction on the Selectmen restraining from

From a recent trial of_‘a “dummy” engine
on one of the New York street railroads, the
conclusion is evident that the employmont
of these motors is pracable. To be sure the
trial was made while the streets were
almost entirely bare of horses to be fright-
ened by the new motor, but there is no rea-
son wby horses cannot be educated to bear
the passage ofa steam locomotive through
the streets as well as that of the larger
locomotive with its train of “thunderous
sound" in the vicinity of railroad depots.
And if this education is too much to require,
it is possible to prevent the escape of smoke
or hissing steam as the dummy passes. As
to’ smoke there is little frightening of
horses, as the steam fire engines dash at a
horse-gallop through the streets of the city,
although the excitement of running horses
and the belching forth of Spark-lighted
volumes of black smoke are trying to horse-
cut damage crdetriment expect the delay
cca sioned by the long trains the dummeis
re allowed to draw. A N cw York paper
says that “on Saturday evening an experi-
ment with asteam-car was made on the
Bleeker street line, which, in consequenc of
its sharp turns and steep grades, offers more
obstacles to its successful use than any other
in the city. The trial, however, was
eminently satisfactory to the president and
other officers of the road who made the
trip from Tenth avenue to Fulton Ferry
Without external aid, it easily turned the
sharpest corner, and on the top of the steep
grade in Elm st it.was stopped, reversed, ane
backed down the declivity,-‘returniug with
out the slightest hindrance. ”
