FAIRPIELD COUNTY ITEMS.

NEW CANAAN.

The ladies of the Baptist Society in this
place gave an oyster supper Wednesday and
Thursday evenings, Oct. 23d and 24th, at
the Town Hall and notwithstanding the un-
pleasant weather the receipts were $07.23,
and they netted $40; it was served in fine
style and was excellent.

The proceeds are to go towards furnish-
iig the new Church which is being erected.
The house is 25x45 with a porch of 10 feet.
The work is done in a neat, substantial
manner, which speaks well for the work-
men employed, cspecially the contractor,
Mr. Terrell. . K.

. WILTON.

Burglars are reaping a very good harvest,
in our town at present. A few weeks ago
the Shirt Factory of Pardee do Taylor was
entered by forcing open the back door, and
about one hundred and twenty-fiveidollars
worth of gOOds taken, and about the same
time several cellars were entered and :large'
quantities of pork, eggs, butter «Ste. taken
and on Thursday night last the store of
James Comstock was robbed of from one
hundred and fifty to two hundred dollars
worth. People are now on the look-out
audit is hoped the theivcs will be found

is doing this, and has this certainty. That part of
it. known as the Innaom DIVISION (from Chicago to
Danvlllc. 135 miles.) was finished last year, and its ’
gross earnings have increased from $34,409.01 in De-
cember, 1871, to 551, 537.95 in August, 1m. . .

The net earnings for August were 880,413.40, or at
the rate of $364,950.52 per annum. The total interest
liability upon the total issue of bonds upon‘ both the
Illluois and Indiana divisions is $280,000 gold. The
Illinois division is, therefore, earning, ml, more than
enough to pay interest upon the entire bonded debt
upon the whole road.

THE ENDIANA DIVISION
is about eighty miles in length,- travei-slug extensive
Bituminous coal fields, and making a direct (and the
shortest possible) line between Chicago and the Black
Coal district utBrazll. _

The Iron and other materials for the " Indiana D1-
visiomhave all been bought and paid _for in cash; a
but or‘lt is nowln operation, and the entire division
is tobe finished this season and opened to a profita-
ble busincfis-

The Company is not, in debt. and owns a large and
verylvaluable real estate in Chicago, besides fining
an equipment of twenty~thrcc first-class locomotives
and about 700 cars. _ ,,

A first mortgage upon such a road, at the rate of
I $18,600 permile, is a safe investment, and we know

of no other railroad bond, ‘ut- the price asked for
this, that can demonstrate a similar value as a secu-
x'il.y for savings banks and others.

We have sold nearly two millions of these bonds
to savings banks, trust companies and the most care-
ful investors, and have but 3850,000bonds remaining.

, ’They are for 81,000 cachiand have forty years to
